Exactly. As a point of principle, never register your details for any reason when and wherever possible. It's no business of the authorities what you buy. Pay particular attention in this regard to anything weapons or precious metals related.

Relatively anonymous ammo purchases can presumably still be made out of state, so it may be worth exercising that option from time to time, or at least, to divide your ammo caches so that even if the State's goons get some of it, they won't get all of it.

As for what to get for the day of the rope?

A Mosin-Nagant, an AK variant (preferably the real thing) and perhaps a Glock 19.

If confiscation is your fear, one should most certainly get something in the most common calibers and the most common weapons, 5.56, 7.92, and 9mm, along with the most common gauge shells for you shotguns. More replacement parts and easier access to essentials then. Also I would say, spares..lots of spare bits and the ability to fabricate parts and , so that's (freely available) cad designs, and 3d printed plans for the most basic zip-gun to things like AR15s, milling machines and other tools, raw materials, reloading kits including all your powders. If available in your state, get something with really high firepower, a man portable machine gun and something you can put on the back of a pickup...then go hide them for when you need them...

Availability of ammo is a prime consideration. Law enforcement and the military use 556 (223) for their AR 15/M4 type weapons. The popular 1911 uses 45 caliber and the Glock uses 9 mm. These can vary but this is the most common form. This means in the USA, if you want ammo in some time of collapse or need, you have to go with something like this rather and an AK 47. An AK 47 would probably be the choice in Eastern Europe or where ever the Soviets once held sway for the same reasons.

What most people fail to realize... is barring an asteroid strike, or an repeat of the Carrington event, their isn't going to be any kind of collapse in western society.

    It doesn't work like that.

Things just change gradually, until it doesn't look like what it used to.

That may be true but let's go down the list of possibilities since every other major civilization has collapsed.

    War
    Asteroid strike
    Solar flare and EM pulse
    Plague
    Economic collapse

Are there more? Some are more probable than others. Some would have multiple effects. Some, like war and economic collapse are general but an actual event may be more specific and not seem like the same thing. Climate change is not because to me this is not a threat.
