    UKIP Leadership Election

Yesterday Farage resigned as leader of UKIP. This thread is to follow developments in the race to replace him.
Who is in the running? As ever Guido gives you your runners and riders:

Paul Nuttall – Tells Guido he is taking soundings. Would be a strong candidate to take forward the Red UKIP strategy of fighting Labour in the north. His coveting of the job did not go unnoticed by Team Nige over the last few months. Hopefully he wouldn’t have to give up his Sunday Sport column.

Steven Woolfe – Says to Guido that he will make a decision once he has consulted with his wife. Stayed noticeably neutral during the UKIP wars of last May, could he be the unity candidate? One of UKIP’s better TV performers, he is ambitious and has the back story. Expect him to run.

Diane James – Touted as a future leader for years, had once been seen as a major rising star but is partial to a gaffe. Nige has always said UKIP’s next leader could be a woman.

Peter Whittle – UKIP’s London mayoral candidate has just ruled himself out.
Suzanne Evans – Wants the job but there is one major problem. She is suspended and isn’t actually in the party.

Douglas Carswell – The Faragists will stop at nothing to prevent this happening. There are moves to kick him out at tonight’s NEC meeting.
    Who are you backing?

    UPDATE: Bookies’ odds via Betfair:

Woolfe EVENS, Nuttall 7/4, Evans 3/1, Carswell 6/1, Diane James 6/1, Reckless 6/1

Last night, Breitbart UK editor Raheem Kassam said he could run:

Raheem Kassam, the London editor-in-chief of the right-wing news outlet Breitbart, has said he is considering running to become UKIP leader.
Nigel Farage stepped down as leader of the party on Monday, saying he had achieved everything he wanted to in his political career by winning the referendum and helping to lead the UK out of the European Union.

Now Kassam, who previously worked as Farage’s close aide during the 2015 general election campaign, has unexpectedly told BBC Newsnight he is considering running for the leadership.

“I intend to shake up the leadership contest,” he later told BuzzFeed News. “Maybe by running. Maybe another way.”

Kassam, 29, who has never held elected office and has previously worked at variety of right-wing campaign groups, also claimed to have backing from his former boss.

“Farage knows and he told my by way of third party that it was a good idea,” he added. “Don’t know if that is true or not, to be honest.”

However, he said he has not yet informed his current employers at Breitbart, the US-headquartered website known for its supportive coverage of Donald Trump in addition to coverage of alternative-right movements and opposition to Gamegate.

Kassam said he is considering standing out of a desire to block current UKIP deputy leader Paul Nuttall from taking the top job.

“Wasn’t expecting to do anything until I heard what Nuttall did at the NEC today,” he said, referring to a disputed meeting of UKIP’s top organisation.
In a cryptic message, apparently referencing major UKIP donor and Leave.EU founder Arron Banks, he added: “Two words and one numbers: Banks / Kassam 2016.”

Maybe Trump offered Farage the Vice President slot? I'll go for that.

It is important she be a strong leader. The day after the Brexit vote people were trying to destroy it, calling for a new do-over election. Unless she gets out there and actively pushes on this independence efforts will be made to cast that whole voting populations as something like Deplorables.

She did a competent acceptance speech, and did very well at a press conference answering some tough questions, and also did well in what I think was her first interview as leader on the BBC's 'Sunday Politics' by 'big-hitter' journalist Andrew Neil. High hopes from me.

Well...I was wrong there! Looks like it will be either Suzanne Evans or Paul Nuttall.
