Facebook Fatigue Sets in for 100,000 Brits: Users Bored with Site Deactivate Accounts

Tired of social networking? Logging off Facebook? You’re probably not the only one.

Fearing for their privacy or perhaps just bored with using the site, 100,000 Britons are said to have deactivated their accounts last month. And Facebook fatigue seems to be catching. Six million logged off for good in the U.S. too, figures show. It’s not all bad news for the site. Worldwide, Facebook is still expanding and has around 600million users, thanks to strong growth in countries such as Mexico and Brazil.

Internet psychologist Graham Jones predicted that Facebook users would suffer the same kind of ‘fatigue’ that comes whenever men and women get bored with trying anything that is new. He said: ‘People get terribly excited about something new and after a while the novelty wears off. ‘Even if it is a new TV series everybody thinks it is fantastic at the beginning and things tail off.

    That you don't conform.

I don't think that having a facebook account or a twitter account are absolute social necessities. I have a good social life and I almost never log onto facebook, and I never used twitter. I just don't get anything out of them. I prefer to stay in contact with my friends via telephone or face-to-face. I noticed that the friends I communicated with solely through facebook became more and more distant. It alienates you from your friends more than anything, unless of course you see them everyday.

Just a handy way of keeping in touch with people. There's nothing remotely 'conformist' about it.

I deactivated my account a long time ago.

I don't want people spying on me. [ Like employers and such.]

Yes but it's not the best way to keep in touch with people.

There is a conformist element to it, but maybe not for all of those who join. A lot of people just don't feel normal unless they have an active account on facebook.

I hate twitter, facebook, and all that crap to be honest.

It's just a popular media frenzy of commercialized social absurdity.

I take pride in going against the fray in not taking any part of it.

It is for me. I never phone or text people, and I go for years without communicating with people. But I like the idea of knowing most of the people I've ever befriended are just a few clicks away in case I ever ever feel like getting back in touch (which I sometimes get random impulses to do). There's quite a few people I remember from years ago I'd love to find on Facebook, even though I'd probably never get round to physically meeting again. I just find it comforting to know they're around.

The site also helped me get in touch with some extended family on my mother's side. I just found a second cousin and sent her a message. Thanks to that, I've pretty much tripled the size of my family (given my immediate family is ridiculously small).

Probably for the ones who are always updating their status and talking about what they had for supper. And also the ones who talk to people online who they see every single day in real life. I never actually post on anyone's wall, and I only send about three PM's a year.

On the whole, though, places like Myspace seem more conformist, given you can accessorise your profile and what not. FB is more matter-of-fact. It's just a utility, like putting your name in the Yellow Pages.

There is a book called Blind Faith by Ben Elton, I think he said it best. "All these people posting the events of their lives and not reading anyone else's". It is more about vanity than keeping in touch, I know people who actually block friends who post too much!

I also don't like that you can't delete your account outright.
I grew up on a belief of honour, courage and the old world values. The world isn't about that anymore, preferring to die a slow death of fast food and cheap thrills.

That’s what I had in mind.

Overall facebook is good for keeping in touch with long-time friends, distant family members, friend in different countries, etc. It is also very helpful in finding long lost relatives/friends, etc, but it can sometimes have a negative effect on some (usually developing) friendships. I guess that negative effect could be attributed to a "they're not going anywhere" attitude. You feel like you don't need to maintain the friendship, or to further develop it because those people are always available to you on facebook, also communicating via facebook or the internet in general for that matter is not very personal because it's so easy. It shows that you really care when you take the trouble to visit someone or to even call them. For this reason, I think it’s a good method of communicating (because it works) but it should not be your first and/or only means of communication. I personally prefer to talk to my friends in person, or on the phone, unless they are in a different country in which case social networking sites are a better option because they're practically free of charge.
