Free Syrien Army Captures 5,000 StGw44s

With a slight grin I read this :

If you’re a WWII history buff like I am this will absolutely blow your mind. The video below shows members of the Free Syrian Army who are fighting against the forces of Syrian “President” Bashar al-Assad that have stumbled upon a contrainer full of rifles. The rebel member who posted the video mistakenly claimed that they had found 5,000 AK-47s. Nope, turns out they stumbed upon 5,000 German WWII STG-44 rifles.
    [...]
The Sturmgewehr 44 was the first assault rifle developed by Nazi Germany, how did so many end up in the Syrian desert? Who knows, maybe the Nazis imported them during the second world war. Maybe they found their way there via the black market. But if someone found a way to sell them to collectors the Free Syrian Army would be able to fund their efforts for quite some time!

Chances are these will be either used by the Syrian Rebels, or destroyed. The closest we’ll get owning an STG-44 in the US (minus a legal pre-ban imported one) is the .22lr version from GSG.

    Interesting, just interesting.

Since when is the real thing banned? Didn't that Batman debut get shot up with modern legally-sold assault rifles?

    Hello Dannecker!

The same thing will happen to the StG 44 what has happened to the old Panzer IV which were turned to crap by the Israeli Army in 1964:

good, but "slightly outmoded" military materiel will be inadequately used by some camel-drivers from the near-east deserts thus ruining the weapons and their own political as well as military standing.

Due to the fact that after WWII. these weapons were still in use with the "German Democratic Republik" for three decades and the "POLTE-Werke" at Magdeburg still could produce vast amounts of ammunition as being the co-inventors of the German "8mm-Kurzpatrone" (better known as 8mm x 33 'Short Mauser'), there should be enough surplus-ammo left even to start a little "campaign".

I doubt the Syrians will use them because it is not good to introduce another caliber with the own dwindling troops and their chain of supply.

Given that Syria and Russia are close allies, these might be stored weapons of which the rebels seized from Syrian forces, since the Soviets were notorious for not having stolen only artwork from the Germans

I think the "Free Syrian Army" is the term given by the western-controlled media for a bunch of ragheaded terrorist bands that want to overthrow Assad.

The Soviet Union and its satellites sold and donated large quantities of WWII captured and surplus weapons to its new allies all over the world, and esp. this part. You can frequently find the StG44 in Lebanese militias. I believe that there still is a plant in Serbia (or there around) producing ammunition for these rifles.

Prior to the pre-emptive strike against marching up Red Army Germany actually sold weapons to the Soviet Union. But that would be to early for the rifle in question. I take it that these are either captured weapons or perhaps the Reds even continued to manufacture them.

This is peculiar. Depending on what sources you read there is an estimated 30 to 70 MILLION Kalashnikovs of various types across the world. In most parts of Africa an AK cost about the same as a goat.

You should think that it would be a lot easier to acquire some Russian or Chinese AK variants rather then keeping these antiques in service. If child soldiers in Africa and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan have access to plenty of AK rifles, why would the Syrian Army be forced to use WWII era guns?

Has the Syrian Army ever used these in battle? Because they do look like they have been in use.

The Middle East is warm and dry, and things do not rust down there (that is why all those old cars that they have are still running so well), and that include assault rifles. So since just having them lying around does not cost any money and they do not deteriorate, why bother about discarding them?
