Odin btw is a simplification of Old Norse Óðinn. The proto-germanic form is reconstructed as *Wōđanaz. I've seen this explained as (and find it convincing):

• *Wōđ: some sort of ecstasy; an inspired rage (in Dutch we still have the word 'woede', meaning 'anger' or 'rage'. We also have that word as a verb 'woeden', which we mainly use to describe what a storm does. 'Er woedt een storm' = a storm rages. Both imho convey only a mundane aspect of *Wōđ)

• -an: indicating something like 'in control of', 'master of'

• -az: just a grammatic suffix, in this case indicating male singular, like latin words ending in -us.
