If You Met Odin, What Would You Ask Him?

There are many questions I would ask him, most of them revolving around the afterlife and the future. What about you guys and gals?

    Please, be serious.

We don't really know very much about the esoteric side of ancient European religions, not even when it comes to the Greeks and Romans who were far more prolific writers.

My thoughts on the whole pagan reconstructionism thing are that it is a nice idea but gets pedantic. If whatever it hearkens to has life in it still, then some sort of more direct experience, reaching out to whatever is out there, seems preferable than trying to reconstruct a hazy past in the modern world, but such an approach also has the danger of being appropriated by notions and forces alien to the ones sought after. The reconstructionist aspect brings order to that chaos but in the process potentially smothers any life which may be found.

Projecting the notions of the enlightenment and of romanticism onto ancient paganism doesn't work either, but WE in the modern world having lived through those things... well they are part of us now, our relation to whatever else exists, be it mere personification, archetypes, metaphor - or even immanent and literal, or something else besides... our relationship will take into account all the history we have accumulated whether we like it or not.

Yes, but we can observe the higher philosophies of the ancient Greek and Roman cultures, such as Pythagoreanism and Neo-Platonism, as well as compare other Indo-European traditions that survived more thoroughly such as the Vedas and the Avestas, and we can conclude from this that man has known of metaphysics, contemplation, and self-inquiry since the deep ancient past, especially within the Indo-European spiritual umbrella.

We can further conclude from this that spiritual transcendence has ever been the goal of all higher religious traditions, including those of the Germanic pagan world. It is my estimation after studying its various forms that modern neo-paganism offers none of this, and very few of the practitioners of this belief system know anything about spirituality whatsoever. If they were true spiritual seekers, they would look elsewhere. Sorry guys, just the way I see it.

Again, assuming that whatever ancient traditions we once had still have any kind of life (which is an assumption, but there seems to be a clear power there manifest if nothing else by how much hold these myths still have over the imagination) then I wouldn't expect them to blossom into their fullest and highest expression the second someone considered the idea.

Nothing good is won without struggle so it should not happen that we just decide we like something and want it back and then it returns, if we were ever to be pagans again... it would take sacrifice. We would have to win back our right to the things our ancestors forgot, we would have to earn our right to wisdom. It wouldn't just fall into our hands because we became exhausted with Christianity...

First thing I thought off when reading the thread title was what did he whisper in the ear of his son Balder before he was burned.

I would ask him, if it was weakness (or anything else?) that he and his gods have perished with the advent of Christianity.

First of all i would ask him for forgiveness that my ancestors turned their backs on the aesir and vanir !!!
Then i would ask him if he is ready to help me and other to rebuilt the heathen religion, in a version for the 21st century. A religion has to develop over time , or it dies. The current state of Catholicism in germany is a prime example for that !

also i would ask people to really answer the question, instead of starting some philosophical debate like ablutive did. I can see that your ideas have merrit, but they are in the wrong place here ! If you want to discuss those question, start a thread about them, and don´t hijack another thread for it !
There won't be humans in 500 years. Enough people choke themselves when they jerk off we gave it a name. We ain't a species made to last.

Judging by it´s name common sense must once have been a pretty common thing. When and why did that change, so it became the rare treasure it is today???
