Pro-Nazi Text Found Under Vienna Memorial

A pro-Nazi text has been discovered under a statue at a war memorial in Vienna, Austrian officials say.

The document - expressing hopes of the German people's unification under the Sonnenrad - a reference to the Nazi swastika - was found in a capsule under the statue of the Unknown Soldier.

It was put there by sculptor Wilhelm Frass in 1935 - three years before Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany.

The metal capsule has now been removed, and the memorial will be redesigned.

Several times a year Austrian leaders and visiting dignitaries lay wreaths at the statue of the Unknown Soldier, the BBC's Bethany Bell in the Austrian capital reports.

But for years the war memorial was dogged by rumours that a Nazi document had been hidden there, our correspondent adds.

The pro-Nazi text was unearthed after an investigation ordered by Austrian Defence Minister Norbert Darabos.

    the memorial will be redesigned.
The evil capsule was buried underneath the monument, so why is a redesign needed? Perhaps to put a Holocaust reference in?

Naturally, they don't want any sculpture done by an "evil Nazi" to be a war memorial. :panic
Most people think as they are trained to think, and most people make a majority.

Well, and why shouldn't they? It has been unearthed and would have stayed so at least in the minds of the people around.

I mean, we all know the present German states despise NS, there's no reason to complain about it again and again. But here it's beyond concrete politics, it's politics itself; why would a system keep propaganda from it's unloved predecessor? It doesn't look like just a cultural reference/reverence...

Rather I'd be watchful what kind of ("modern"? "antimilitaristic"?) redesign is planned. Honour the fallen for they gave everything to what they believed in, however we may feel about it.
