Some new info on the Rus from Empires and Barbarians.
The Rus, Scandinavian river traders, were much more warlike than previously thought. They traded in furs and slaves. Slave trading was a nasty business, going into a village or town and "taking" peoples. The Rus apparently excelled at this. They mainly traded in Slavic slave girls.
They also conducted sea raids on the heavily fortified Persian coastal towns on the south coast of the Caspian sea, circa 880.
The most amazing raids they did were on the city of Constantinople on the Black sea, circa 907. Twice they attacked the city and burned houses and looted churches outside the walls. Probably with 2000 or less warriors. This was the eastern Roman empire with an army, but were never attacked by the Roman army. They intimidated the Roman emperor enough so that he signed a peace treaty with the Rus allowing them to trade inside the City.
How could this happen? The only way I could see this happening would be that the Rus were huge, heavily built men. Who just by their huge size were able to do all these things with little opposition. I think the men may have approached 7' (213cm) tall. The Iraqi ambassador who described them said they were the finest physical specimens he had ever seen. He said they were as tall as date palms.
