Nowadays they are very integrated, there are very few sami living traditional lives here in Scandinavia. Maybe it is different in Russia. The place with the most sami here is Oslo.

As Hersir states the degree of integration is very high.

Regarding their "traditional" lifestyle it is more or less completely gone(though Sami culture, history and craft is held in high regard among themselves), as they were essentially nomadic, which is not the case for all but a tiny portion of the current population at least in Norway and Sweden. But I can't imagine the case to be any different among, say, the Skolt Sami of the Kola. There are only few Sami left except for the Norwegian portion, which is by far the largest.

Many people believe there is some sort of indigenous religion still in practice there, but this is hardly the case, and most are Christians on a somewhat secular level(Though they do often hold a notion of ancestral sacredness towards pre-christian sacrificial sites and the likes). A lot of this is based upon constructs of mutual indigenous culture with groups like the North American Indians and needless to say: Tourism. Lots of things we consider to be typically Sami is in fact not put in correct context, and many things are amalgams of regional customs and traditions put in a pan-sami package that can be hard for outsiders to decipher. We are talking styles of sami chant, handicraft etc. and the contexts these are put in.

Regarding the question on their origins: They are often considered, and claim themselves to be, the indigenous population of Fenno-Scandia, which is quite debatable and hard to prove, but is very important in the Sami claim of cultural and ethnic sovereignty.

They're a Uralic-Altaic ethnic group with some physical caucasian traits. They're ancestral land stretches from northern Norway into areas of north-west Russia.

The Sami constitute a branch of the Mongoloid race, just as Native Americans and Japanese/Chinese/Korean i.e. classical Mongoloids as well as Polynesians do. The Sami look like an ancient proto-Mongoloid race in my opinion, some resemble Caucasoids albeit superficially, and others resemble fully evolved Mongoloids.
