    Germanic Tribe(s) of Norway

Does anyone know who the Germanic Tribes of the area now known as Norway would have been Pre-Viking Age? In other words, who do the Norwegians descend from? The Harudes, Cimbri or the Suiones? Were the pre-Viking age tribes all Swedish and then they migrated to Norway?

    Thank you.

The Rugii, also Rugians, Rygir, Ulmerugi, or Holmrygir (Norwegian: Rugiere, German: Rugier) were an East Germanic tribe who migrated from southwest Norway to Pomerania around 100 AD, and from there to the Danube River valley. They were allies of Attila until his death in 453, and settled in what is now Austria after the defeat of the Huns at Nedao in 453.

The Rugians helped Odoacer establish the Kingdom of Italy, and converted to Arianism by 482. In 487 they suffered a crushing defeat in Vienna at the hands of Odoacer and his Herulian and Scirian followers. They then joined with the Ostrogothic army of Theodoric in its campaign to take over Italy in 488–493. Within the Ostrogothic Kingdom, they kept their own administrators and avoided intermarriage with the Goths. They disappeared after Totila's defeat in the Gothic war.

    Germanic Tribe(s) of Norway

    Var hälsad!

This is my first post in this forum

I have for a time wondered about the origins of the norwegian people. The thing I wonder about is what Germanic tribes they descend from. The swedish people is descended from "Götar" (Geats, Goths) and "Svear". It is from the last word that we get the modern name of my people in the swedish tounge, "svenskar".

    Svear - Svenskar.

However the name of modern Norwegians in both Swedish and Norwegian is "Norrmän" and "Nordmenn" which translates to "Northmen/Norsemen" or "Men from/of the north". This is confusing to me because this is also the term used to denote any Scandinavian tribe during the viking age.

So what were the name/names of the tribes in Norway prior to the modern term of "nordmenn"?

Thank you for the information! When in history did these tribes "become" 'nordmenn'? I can guess it was during the middle ages after the introduction of christianity and the centralization of the norwegian kingdom?
