The U.S. Government Will Spy on You If You Use Certain Words Online

The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as ‘attack’, ‘Al Qaeda’, ‘terrorism’ and ‘dirty bomb’ alongside dozens of seemingly innocent words like ‘pork’, ‘cloud’, ‘team’ and ‘Mexico’.”

I've already said my thoughts on this stuff in various other threads: it's invasive and intrusive. And considering nowadays there is a multitude of encryption options, if people really want to plan something behind closed doors, they can. This while innocent citizens get snooped on in the process. It creates a "guilty until proven innocent" mentality IMO.

I completely agree with you, but for people like myself who have not read your other posts and articles I just thought it would be worthy to have some substance to your OP to spark a discussion or debate.

Unfortunately that completely guarantees we have been data mined to the fullest. I just don't understand what putting everyone in the world as labeled "terrorists" even does to better the world. Who is so bored they cannot let us just live our lives ?

It means everyone is a criminal, so they can arrest anyone at will. The propaganda arm will label them as terrorists so the majority of dumbed-down lemmings will support anything that is done to them. It's a better world for the elite, because they can do whatever they please to wipe out dissent. For the rest of us? Serfdom of the soul... so what else is new?

I guess that they have put enough innocent words on that list to be able to get a search warrant for anyone. If they want to look at your computer or some other stuff all it will take is a quick search of your browsing and posting history, and before you know it your local SWAT-team will be at your door. Or they will just get a warrant to look at your financials, wiretap your phones, lojack your car, and bug your home.

Mugs try to beat the system and often fail.
Encryption only attracts more attention and interest from the Feds.

Smart people keep their big talks offline, off the telephone, off the record.

I'm not so sure about that. In the past, and perhaps in the present, yes, but with the presents state of affairs the legitimate to semi-legitimate interest in privacy is growing. And with all file-sharers using VPNs and ordinary citizens paying their bills over SSL, there is only so much that they can do. Any analysis above the simplest will require actual man-hours. And it is my firm belief that the commercial development of the Net requires encryption and other privacy-increasing features.

Is that data traffic conspiratorial or just porn? There is no way to tell.

Well this really shows how useful our government is. while they are watching the guy who was eating a pulled pork sandwich talking about some fight in a movie where the guy attacked with a knife, afterwords saying man this sandwich is the bomb. The real terrorist has plenty of time to bomb whatever he wants.
