Can we keep the matter of players' ethnic backgrounds elsewhere, please? I intended this thread to be for match discussion, not railing about an (unfortunate) issue that we are all too familiar with.

The performance of these players will have ethnic and social implications for the future of any European nation in question.

So, we must know who they are, and hope for their failures in the competition, the future of every nation is at stake as well, since a sport like football has profound social implications for many nations in Europe.
I didn't say it isn't important, I said this thread isn't the place for it. If you want to discuss the issue, start a thread for it - I think there already are some, in fact. If you can't escape the issue, then there's a simple solution: don't read this thread, don't post in it, and don't watch the games. If there's a comprehension issue surrounding what I'm saying - for the third time now - then there's no advice I can offer you.

Of course the issue of the ethnicity of the players representing our nations in sports is an important one, and one of the main reasons why I don't really get into any of these mass sport events. But Loyalist intended this thread as a place to mainly discuss the event and the matches themselves. The issue of ethnicity has been brought up, we're all aware of it, but now let's respect his wish and not get too off topic.

If someone really feels the need to discuss the other issue with regards to the Euro 2012 in more detail, a parallel thread could be created for that purpose.

They do have electrifying play, indeed. At the very least, I expect them to manage a repeat of their 2008 run. The only side that was, thus far, 100% convincing against a comparable opponent (the Danish upset of the Netherlands aside, still celebrating. ).

I would say Isaksson is our weakest link without a doubt. The last good goalie we had was Thomas Ravelli. I give some credit to Hedman as well, since he was pretty good. Larsson is great indeed, and Källström which I know personally is not only a humble and easy going person but also a great player and team member. (not to forget he's got a pretty wife , sorry ladies for being a male chauvinist).

Ibrahimovic is half bosnian (father) and half croat (mother).

Yeah, I have such a great memories from that summer, except that Russia crushed us with 2-0 But what great football it was indeed from the Russian team.. Arshavin and Pavluchenko where almost unbeatable. I remember we borrowed a super luxiurious trailer and there was rain and storm outside on the Öland-Island, but sitting inside was cozy and watching great games...

Of course Ravelli was a good keeper, he has superior Austro-Bavarian blood (mother Carinthian, father East Tyrolese).

Hehe, Sweden was playing two of its games in Innsbruck, as a consequence many Swedish fans were in town. We celebrated epic nights of drinking with them.

They even taught us a fan chant in our language about our then team-captain (Burgenland Croat): Ivanschitz hat die Nummer sieben [note: he had #10], ist homosexuell, homosexuell, homosexuell.

Of the four goalscorers in Group D, only one is a native (Shevchenko of Ukraine). The goalscorer for France was Nasri (Algerian), the goalscorer for England was Lescott (Afro-Caribbean) and finally, the goalscorer for Sweden was Ibrahimovic (Bosnian/Croat). There are still a few minutes left of the Ukraine-Sweden game, so hopefully we'll see some European creativity. If a Western European team wins the tournament they should have little to celebrate about.

England exceeded expectations today; most were predicting they would be lucky not to go two or three down against France, so it was a solid performance and a draw suits us just fine. We won't need to play so defensively against weaker sides, and particularly so when Rooney is back for Ukraine.

Ideally the Sweden v. Ukraine match would have ended in a draw, and would have done had the Swedes not blown chance after chance in the second half. However, I'm glad that Ukraine, the weakest team in the group, got the win, as it at least dents the chances of the only other real rival to England for advancing.
