    Giving Thanks

One, normally gives thanks for something they are given or as an appreciative for things done on their behalf.

It is one current of belief I have heard in heathen circles that the Gods and Goddesses are always working on behalf of the issues confronting the universe. So, in that vein, we could say that we are thankful for their efforts. However, I think this still stinks of Christian residue.

I expect my daughter to be polite, to say Yes Sir and No Ma'am as a matter of convention and etiquette. I do not thank her for living up to that expectation of behavior. I say that, as one means of comparison to my thesis.

The Gods and Goddesses, do their work because it is what is expected of them. To honor a deed that is what should already be done, seems off to me. The deeds of heroes, are sung because they went above and beyond.. achieving renown as such. That, is worthy of a song of praise.

Tyr giving his hand, Odin plucking out his eye.. Thor ever at the defense from the Giants. These deeds are worthy of remembrance. My point, though is that we do not get lost in the all too slave like devotion of giving thanks merely for being alive or existing.

I see the council of the Gods as I would a gathering at the Thing of tribal elders. We approach it, as free men and women and speak our issues and, through the aide of the lore in lieu of a direct dialogue, we can glean insights yes, but the true inspiration should be upon us as individuals. To know what we should do and have the courage and strength to do it.

That is my perspective, the reason for the post would be to gain thoughts from fellows of our folk way. How do you view deity as such? More like ancestors? Other?

    I thank all in advance.

Scandinavians are very polite, Finns and Americans I've met has not been well-manered. Parents should teach their children to be thankful and humble, no matter if you're christian or heathen.

I used my example as just that, only in the service to further the religious implications going forward.

I would thank you to further the line of thought I have advocated and not another.

Which, is impolite, I may add for you to have done so give the topic.

I thank higher powers all the time. When we radiate gratitude, the Universe is a better place.

Giving thanks and conducting oneself with ''politeness'' or high-standards of behavior is not necessarily a product of Religion, i think. However ones culture, which takes Religion into account, does have a role in molding ones behavior, and therefor molds the likelihood of giving thanks to.
Ancestral sacrafices come into play in our collective energy as a People, which molds how we interact with each other. Its gotten to the stage where in order to cement a ''standard'' of conduct we must get our house in order. That means no clashing elements, i.e. foreign Peoples with different views of the very concept of ancestry and the spirituality we associate with it.
