    Your Epitaph?

What would you like to have written on your tombstone or commemorative plaque? Excuse me for the morbid topic, but it's been concerning me lately since I haven't decided yet if I want anything and what will it be? Maybe something cool like "death is only the beginning"? Well, there is still time to decide.

    Here's what an epitaph is:

An epitaph (from Greek ἐπιτάφιον epitaphion "a funeral oration" from ἐπί epi "at, over" and τάφος taphos "tomb") is a short text honoring a deceased person, strictly speaking that is inscribed on their tombstone or plaque, but also used figuratively.

    Notable epitaphs

Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by
that here, obedient to their law, we lie.

    — Simonides's epigram at Thermopylae

I am ready to meet my Maker.
Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.

    — Winston Churchill

To save your world you asked this man to die:
Would this man, could he see you now, ask why?

    — Epitaph for the Unknown Soldier, written by W. H. Auden

Against you I will fling myself, unvanquished and unyielding, O Death!

    — Virginia Woolf

Good frend for Jesus sake forebeare,
To digg þe dust encloased heare.
Blese be þe man þat spares þes stones,
And curst be he þat moves my bones.
    In modern English:
Good friend for Jesus sake forbear,
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And curst be he that moves my bones.

    — William Shakespeare

I told you I was ill.

    — Spike Milligan

    I've finally stopped getting dumber.

    — Paul Erdős

    That's all folks.

    — Mel Blanc

If anyone at my funeral has a long face, I'll never speak to him again.

    — Stan Laurel

Consider, friend, as you pass by: As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, you too shall be. Prepare, therefore, to follow me.

    — Scottish tombstone epitaph

Sleep after toyle, port after stormie seas,
Ease after warre, death after life, does greatly please.

    — Joseph Conrad tombstone epitaph. (epigraph taken from Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene

I'm not decided either but I really like this quote: "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality." It would be kind of weird for a (mostly) "unbeliever", but it figuratively holds true enough IMO.

I want cremation though so it would be a commemorative plaque or something.

I want to be cremated when I die and have my ashes scattered outside near some beautiful trees and forests, no need for a Epitaph. Just let nature take care of me and not be stuck 6 feet underground.

    A good thread!

Mine is a little long, preferably on a boulder near the oak under which i will lie...

Though here at journey's end I lie
    In darkness buried deep,
Beyond all towers strong and high,
    Beyond all mountains steep,
Above all shadows rides the Sun
    And Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
    Nor bid the Stars farewell.

    JRR Tolkien

    An interesting epitaph..........

And now, It's time to *say "Goodbye".*Now, as I go*out of sight.*
And I'll be better in memory, than ever I was in real life.
My days on the Hills*now are*over and the cattle*are all*at the barn,
Dust will now rest on my old chair and I'll no longer sip from the Horn.
The fire*now has*burned to an ember,
And few will be left to remember.
    Walk on......,
    John
