    Nordic Valknut Flags

Hey all. I hope this is the correct thread for this!

I just created these myself. I got Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Finland. They're fairly simple- just the flag and a valknut attached.

If you have any requests just speak your mind. Other flags, other symbols, other ideas!

    Takk!
    Erik

Justo ne question, why is the Finnish flag there? Different mythology and symbols.
Please don't confuse the terms "nordid" and "nordic".

^^^Suppose after a century or two of Swedish control there's some residual Swedish traces in peoples in parts of Finland... don't a couple of Finnish cities have dual names: in Swedish as well as Finnish?

Erik: similar design for the Faroes and Greenland would be most effective as well.

Sure, but Finland has never been a Norse or Germanic country

    True enough.

Under Swedish rule, could it have been compared to say, other European colonial efforts?

Contact between Scandinavians and Finnics goes way back before that. Still, I don't think they have a legitimate ground to identify with this particular Norse symbolism. Just like other Germanics on certain parts of our culture don't.

Indeed, it's a stretch for Finns to adopt these Norse symbols just because they've had historical contact with the Norse. Finland already has its own mythology and heritage to drawn upon.

Also, you forgot the Faroe Islands. People always forget them.

Depends on what you mean by "colonial". They were a part of our kingdom and ruled by a Swedish aristocracy (and even today, the Fenno-Swedes have political power disproportionate to their numbers). But no, it wasn't "colonial" in the same sense as Europeans ruling over Africa.

You could compare it with English rule over the Irish, I suppose. Of course, the Swedish-Finn relations were never as brutal as the former.

I know the Finns was a bit of the stretch, but I'm sure there's more than one Finn Asaturer out there.

A sane Finnish heathen should be praying to Ilmarinen and Tuonetar, not to the Norse gods. They have an old pagan heritage of their own, no need to worship that of their Scandinavian neighbors.

Valknutar AND Christian crosses on the same flag? No thanks. Pretty good job otherwise.
