Question Were the Indians Noble Savages?

    Were the Indians Noble Savages?
    by Dr. Don Boys

The Indians in North America were sleeping peacefully in their hogans, wigwams, and long houses during the early hours of October 12, 1492. They were dreaming as they had for centuries, of flashing salmon, thundering herds of bison, an arrow striking a deer, and the sound of corn rustling in the evening breeze, with no idea of the events that would happen that day when Europeans would step out of a small boat into the pounding surf.

Columbus had arrived. He delivered civilization to this continent–and all that went with it, good and bad. As the Indians began to stir from a sound sleep, Columbus was nearing the island of San Salvador.
The “noble savage” is a product of imaginative writers with humanistic leanings. Many of the Indians were brutal savages, even cannibals! The New Columbia Encyclo-pedia reported on some Northwest tribes such as the Kwakiutl: “They had a highly classified society with chiefs, nobles, commoners, and slaves….This distinctive culture, which included cannibalistic rituals, was not greatly affected by European influences until after the late 18th century….” Yes, some Indians kept slaves and ate them during hard times! Wonder why you weren’t taught that in public schools?
You are supposed to feel guilty for being white, middle class, and Protestant (or Baptist) especially relating to what we have done to the land since taking it from the “noble savage.” However, was the Indian so careful with the environment? The Columbia Encyclopedia tells about the Choctaws: “...They hunted with bow and arrow and blowgun, caught fish by poisoning streams….” Yes, friends and neighbors, the “noble savage” was often a polluter. Sorry about that.
If the white man had not beached his boats on the sands of Jamestown, Plymouth Rock, and Cape Cod, the Indians would still be huddled around their soot-lined tepees warming themselves over a fire made by rubbing dry sticks together. They would still be burying their dead children because of childhood diseases, and maybe the air would be cleaner if the white man had never come, but who would be alive to care?

Of course they weren't "noble savages", but that's pretty common knowledge now. It's mainly in the white-guilt history books that they're shown as innocent victims of the evil white man. (I think they even used the term "American Holocaust".)

They're not even "Native Americans", they are mongoloid Siberians.

The over the last 50 years the American Media has portrayed the American Indians as paleo-enviromentalists, paleo-hippies (communal) & shamans. It's all a lie.

The answer is no. As long as they were savages, they were never noble. They cut the fetuses out of pregnant mothers' abdomens. They drank and smoke till they killed themselves (and still do anyway). I think that is enough said about injuns. Anyone who feels the need to debate this is probably doing so because they have genetic connections to them and they are not letting on about it.

They were a primitive form of humanoid that had already reached their peak, and were beginning to decline at the time of contact with Europeans. At one time they had 'cities' which they built large mounds of earth and moats and temples on those mounds. These 'cities' were abandoned by 1492. All that remains of them are the earthen mounds and some stone age tools.

Also about them being in "one" with nature, there is very strong evidence that they hunted some species into extinction a example would be the woolly mammoth. They lived in a area until the resources were used up, than moved on to another area. Their "skills" at cultivation were often mere luck. They did not "respect" the animals they hunted often driving whole herds of them off cliffs young, old, male, female it did not matter.

They were few in number because of their subsistence life style, they did not plan for the future other than one winter ahead, even then they often did not have enough food to make it through. North America has a huge amount of natural resources, yet they could not figure out how to use them enough to ward off stavation in the winter.

There are places in North America were raw metal is found on the surface, yet they could not even figure out how to utilize it other than a very few copper artifacts.

Later during the contact period Europeans often described them as dirty and unkept. There are even reports of them having fleas and lice.

    Oh, how noble.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

No they weren't. Yes, we did some cruel things but it's not like the indians were innocent, harmless victims. They would murder, rape, kidnap and sell settlers into slavery.

People like to complain about Europeans but the indians were just as bad. All races, groups, cultures etc have done the same things as the Europeans, except Europeans are the only ones who are expected to apologise and feel bad.
    Proud to be Germanic.

Even though my ancestry is English, Germany is my favorite country.

Europeans might've brought grain-based alcohol to the New World centuries ago but no one's making the injuns drink the firewater nowadays.

Why is it never mentioned that they were raiding, plundering, pillaging, looting, and feuding with each other a long time before any palefaces ever showed up in their lands?
