Scientists Drilling Through More Than Two Miles of Ice to Reach 20-million-year-old Subglacial Lake in Antarctica Haven't Been Heard from in Six Days

Missing scientists mystery deepens in frozen Antarctica

The world holds its breath, hoping for the best after six days of radio silence from Antarctica -- where a team of Russian scientists is racing the clock and the oncoming winter to dig to an alien lake far beneath the ice.

The team from Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) have been drilling for weeks in an effort to reach isolated Lake Vostok, a vast, dark body of water hidden 13,000 ft. below the surface of the icy continent. Lake Vostok hasn't been exposed to air in more than 20 million years.

I have too admit I am rather anxious to see what they find under there. There is the real possibility of some rather extraordinary life down there.

One thing that keeps coming to my mind though, is what happens when we open something that has been seperated for millions of years and let loose a new type of bacteria or virus that evolved without us being exposed to it for millions of years. New flu viruses infect us each year and we have trouble with them even though the changes in them are minute, the idea of one mutating and changing for 5, 10, 20 million years without us being exposed to it in that time seems to me to have some spooky potential.

You have a point... And brings to attention the fact year after year this is done continually around the world in bio-weapon labs - the latest effort being making the H1N1 Flu virus much more contagious by mutating it four times.

So far, the 'research' hasn't been published - though that it exists has created one hell of a risk that didn't exist before.

No sign of "Nazi" flying saucers taking revenge on those Russian intruders yet? Damn, I very disappointed! And I mean that only half as a joke....

    Wouldn't it be lovely?

Norwegian article states there are some German bunker nearby built in 1944 which they are trying to locate.
