Post Chimpanzee and Human Ancestors May Have Interbred

The evolutionary split between humans and our nearest evolutionary cousins, chimpanzees, may have occurred more recently than we thought, according to a new comparison of the respective genetic sequences. What's more, it might have been a messy divorce rather than a clean break — leading to the controversial theory that our two sets of ancestors may have interbred many thousands of years after first parting company.
The discovery also casts doubt on the status of fossils that were thought to represent the first flowering of the human branch of the evolutionary tree — but which now may have to be reclassified as coming from a time before our split with the rest of the apes.
Previous estimates put the split at as much as 7 million years ago — meaning that Toumaï, a fossil dating from at least 6.5 million years ago in Chad and assigned to the species Sahelanthropus tchadensis, was hailed as the earliest-known member of the line that gave rise to modern humans.
But researchers led by David Reich of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, now calculate that the split may have occurred no more than 6.3 million years ago, and possibly as recently as 5.4 million. That would make Toumaï older than the time of the split.
    Early days
The researchers make their claim after comparing the genetic codes of humans, chimpanzees, gorillas and other primates in unprecedented detail — more than 20 million DNA 'letters' in all. By checking the differences between different species' DNA sequences, they were able to estimate the time since they first diverged.
But the story is not simple, Reich and his team explain in their study, published online in Nature1. Different sections of the genome differ by different amounts, suggesting that they parted ways at different times. The divorce period between the two species, the data suggest, could have lasted a million years.
The region bearing the most similarity is the X chromosome. This is exactly what one might expect if the two lineages had continued to interbreed after first starting to separate.
The X chromosome, one of the pair of sex-determining chromosomes, is the home of many genes that govern fertility, Reich explains. So any two species that could mate with one another would be expected to have similar X chromosomes. And natural selection would prevent these chromosomes from diverging for as long as the hybridization was going on.

Technically we are still apes. Biologically apes are superfamily hominoidea and homo sapiens belongs to that superfamily.

We exclude homo sapiens (East African Plains Ape) from apes in common use of language just because we want to be different.

We're apes huh? This type of thread is getting tiring. Nowadays every average man is a scientist. I can't wait till the one discovery is made that debunks all of this mularkey.

I'm no average man. Did you learn anything about science, like biology or evolution, in school?

The embargoed work from the other thread is about "archaic" (read: ape) admixture in Africans, suggesting that Africans did not only interbreed with other archaic forms of humanoids, but in fact with apes (chimps, gorillas) probably less than 50,000 years ago.

Here's an article that talks about another study of an Indian scientist:

A public claim by a fellow of the prestigious Royal Geographic Society that humans did not all come from Africa — and that blacks, whites and Asians have different ancestors — has been dismissed by world experts as “dangerous”, “wrong” and “racist”.

In a paper widely trumpeted and due for release in book form, Akhil Bakshi, the leader of a recent major scientific expedition supported by India’s prime minister, claims that “Negroid”, “Caucasian” and “Mongoloid” peoples are not only separate races but separate species, having evolved on different continents.

Of course stuff like the above follows, a) to keep alive the out of africa myth and b) giving all humans "archaic" admixture, to keep up the myth of all humans are equal. Works that support the way more likely multiregional theory either are ridiculed or embargoed because they dont fit the party line.

Yeah, I did. So what? And every 20 years there's new theories. Did you know we have similar DNA to plants? So did our ancestors hump plants too?
You know, why do you even bother supporting, fighting for or believing in your folk? What's the point? We're all the same essentially. So why don't we instead of trying to point out the differences, why don't we spend more effort in trying to blur the lines? If the differences between us, them and monkeys is alomost "nil", why don't we just try to assimilate and forget stupid, insignificant not important differences? Hell, why don't we act like apes? Or try to train apes to act like us? Why don't we and the negroes, asians and apes all become one big happy, gay family?
