English people have Austria's role in the second world war shaped by that lovely film, "The Sound of Music".
That was a classic! I can still hear Julie Andrews singing ...

"The hills are alive with the sound of Panzers"

I remember watching that movie as a very young kid, long before I had any conception of politics and developing a considerable dislike for the snotty captain and his musical brood and a liking for Rolf and the other nazis. I think it must have been in my blood!

The opposite is true. American history documentaries chronicling the events of WWII are, in comparison to those produced in Britain, far less intellectually stimulating and brimming with factual/historical discrepancies and sensationalist language.

British documentaries do not lack certain biases of course, although I am confident that many of the German members belonging to this board could happily watch them without feeling particularly insulted of discriminated against. Our documentaries tend to be very well structured, and fact rather than opinion dominates these broadcasts. High ranking National Socialists are not safe from ridicule, although the bravery of the ‘rank and file’ German soldier is respected. If you’re prepared to overlook the odd twisted truth here and there, our history documentaries can be enjoyed.

In contrast, American documentaries are significantly less high-brow than ours. For example, I was watching an American documentary regarding the soldiers of the Waffen SS fighting in Eastern Europe quite recently. If my memory serves me correctly, they were described as ‘’men motivated by an evil ideology’’. As if this wasn’t enough, they were also referred to as being ‘’bloodthirsty murderers’’, ‘’sick minded’’ and ‘’tyrants’’. Himmler was also labelled as a ‘’barbaric warlord’’. Hitler didn’t escape this barrage of disrespect either, being referred to as a ‘’madman’’ more than once. American documentaries are far more emotive than ours, and I strongly advise all to steer well away from them.

My father in law, who was from Austria, always said (or screamed really) "THE ANCHLUß WAS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO AUSTRIA!!" And when "The Sound Of Music" would come up in a conversation or on tv, he would go into an rage over it. He hated that film. He said it was full of inaccuracies and that the Von Trapps not only didn't "escape" from the Nazis, but that the Nazis basically waved goodbye to them because they were glad to see the family go. Oh, and like the one above person, I always thought Rolf was the best thing about the movie too!
