A 25-year-old sailor has become the first Scot to qualify for this year's London Olympics.

Luke Patience, from the village of Rhu on the Firth of Clyde, was confirmed as part of Team GB in London.

Patience, who has been sailing since he was seven years old, will compete in the 470 Dinghy class with English partner Stuart Bithell.

They clinched their Olympic spots by coming second in the recent world sailing championships in Australia.

The pair, who teamed up in 2009, will go for gold in Weymouth, Dorset, where Luke is now based.

Patience began competing at the age of nine, taking part in events around Scotland.

By the age of 18 he had competed at international level in several sailing categories.

Since teaming up with Bithell, Patience has won several medals at European and World Cup regattas.
