Any Volga Deutsche or Germans from Russia Here?

Catherine the Great gave land to the Germanic people mostly Mennonites, to farm in the Volga River area. My family and my husbands family migrated from Russia in the 1870s to the US and Canada, many other families, like those of Ingrid Rimland migrated to South America. Are there any fellow Volga Deutsche on the forum here?

Family names, Gaede, Schultz, Neufeldt, Fuller, Wagner, Nikel,

    I'm a descendant of one
My maternal grandfathers family was one of the emigrating Germans from Russia. He gave me a book titled "From Catherine to Khrushchev" which describes the history of the German diaspora in Russia and their subsequent flight to America

I'm married to one, her parents were born here to Crimean German immigrants that came over in the 1880's. They grew up in a German area of North Dakota.

Here's some links to some interesting info:

This next one is a huge genealogy site that has tons of birth and marriage records, with it we traced my wife's patronymic line back to 1756 Prussians.

Certain members of my family moved to Russia with military ties. They have started talking with us again since the fall of communism. We stem from a common ancester in Pomerania. They share the family name Roegge.

I met several Volga Germans when I was Germany. They were more Russian than German. Overall, a weird bunch.

Yes, there's a big difference in culture between the Volga /Don/Crimean Germans that emigrated before the revolution and those that survived the Soviet Administration and WWII.

A quick trip to Odessa, Washington State (USA) or any of several small towns in North or South Dakota would correct your view of these people.

For instance, my wife's father spoke only German until he entered the public school system where he had to learn English.

Usually, it was only the school personnel and some government workers that didn't use German for their day to day communication in these communities.

The pressures of Americanization were much gentler than the Russification process in the USSR. But now days, of course, the children of these people are no different from any other white Americans and you only see the cultural remnants during the holidays.

Yeah, that's the impression I get as well. Those who left before the revolution are like any other Americans nowadays, and those who left afterwards are like Russians. I haven't yet come across a Volga German who felt like an actual German, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough.

It's possible that Crimean Germans are different from Volga Germans, because the Crimean Germans I know are well aware of their German lineage.

Growing up hearing your parents speak with a German accent and swear or pray in German will clue you into the fact that something is different here.

This only applies to people of a certain age, of course, the ones younger than 30 - 40 or so, that grew up away from the communities... once they learn their Grandparents or Great-Grandparents were born in the Crimea, they think they must be of Russian descent.

My Grandfather and I still speak in German whenever we see each other. He has the most uncanny Schwäbisch accent. His family left before with usurping of the Empire by the Bolsheviks, of course.

I know one. She has a heart-shaped face(very Eastern European) and green eyes(a very Germanic trait).
