The Farm Protects Against Asthma and Allergy

Children who grow up on a farm are only half as likely to have asthma and allergies as a child from the city.

Growing up on a farm, including horses, pigs, cows and sheep, certainly sounds idyllic for many. Now it turns out that there is another good reason to live out the dream of living in the country.
The risk of developing asthma and allergy is actually much lower.

It is the result of a new Danish study has just been published in the scientific journal Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

    - The result shows that it provides a protective effect to be born and raised in the country. The effect lasts until tyveårsaleren, says Torben Sigsgaard, Professor of Occupational Medicine of Aarhus University, who conducted the study in collaboration with researchers from Arbejdsmedicinsk Clinic at Aarhus University Hospital.

    Examined agricultural students

The survey has Sigsgaard and his colleagues followed all agricultural students from two years in Denmark - 2000 students in total - since 1993. Students have been studied continuously, making the study unique.

    - We could see that there were some factors that played in and gave an increased risk of asthma, such as smoking or working in the barn with the pigs or cows. But the interesting thing was that when we looked at where pupils were grown up, we could see that the risk was halved for those children who had grown up in a farming community surrounded by animals, explains Sigsgaard.

This is because children in the country are exposed to many micro-organisms from the environment of the farms early in life.

    - The microorganisms stimulates the innate immune system, which provides a better balance in the immune system throughout life, says Sigsgaard.

    - Our hypothesis is that the first years of life are important, and that the effect begins in the womb.

Can provide better prevention of asthma and allergy

The study harmony with previous studies suggesting that children who grow up in the city, are more likely to develop allergies. Sigsgaard hope that his performance in the future may have implications for all who suffer from asthma and allergies.

    - We hope that we can learn more about the mechanisms that trigger allergies and asthma, so that one day we can prevent these disorders, he said.

I'm not discrediting the source but interestingly my great great grandfather lived and worked on a farm all his life and still had asthma.

Maybe good country air and clean living is what helps people. I know what you are saying wallflower my mother has asthma and been around farms her whole life.

It could be that it is not so much that the farms are good is that the city life is bad.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

Wish this had happened to me. I grew up on a farm and still had terrible allergies and asthma. It made any outdoor chores an absolutely miserable experience for me.

a significiant minority will ALWAYS have asthma, but in many recent cases, a dirt-free world is to blame
