Question What is the "Freest" Country in the World?

Just curious what we all think on here. Personally, I believe the US to be the freest nation on Earth, but that's me. So, please feel free to post your opinion.

Here's a few examples for what I mean by "free".

    1) If you grow your own fruits and vegetables on your property, are you free to construct your own selling booth in your front yard, and sell your produce as you see fit?
1-a) Can you grow and sell ANY produce that you want?
1-b) Can you distill your own beverages and freely sell them to your neighbors, family, and friends?

If you can't answer "yes" to ALL of those questions, then you aren't free.

    2) If you have a gun that a buddy of yours takes a liking to, are you free to sell your buddy the gun as you see fit?

Again, if you can't answer "yes", then you aren't free.

    3) If you decide that you do not want, or cannot afford, to have your children go through a formal education, and your idea of "home-schooling" is simply to push your kids to read as much as possible, and study up on as many subjects as interest them (or those that you suggest for them), - ie., no "official" tests, and no official reporting of any kind - are you free to do so?

That's all I have time for right now, but I'm sure that others can pick up where I've left off.

Also, check out this interactive map, I found it to be pretty interesting.

Well what do you define as "free"?

Then my answer would be between Iceland and Finland. From what I heard they have those same freedoms as posted above and a ton more.

I would say the countires without a Jewish central bank, so my vote goes to North Korea. As for Europe it is Belarus.

Freedom and being free has lots of meanings.

I would say any country where freedom of speech is protected and the citizens are armed to defend that freedom. If the citizens are armed they are as free as they want to be.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

    It's not the U.S.

Taiwan, I'd say, which is still holding on to itself after being betrayed by the U.S.

I've always considered the actual government of the Han people to be in Taipei and not in Beijing.

Here's a very comprehensive study on economic freedom: http://www.heritage.org/index/Ranking

I'd vote for Switzerland as 'most free' since they have more gun rights than New Zealand & Australia, and Hong Kong & Singapore are big on economic freedoms but not so much social freedoms.

Interesting comment - the Beijing cadres all look like they have been manufactured in a factory. A few people I know have said Taiwan is more like the true Han culture as many of its relics, temples etc were not destroyed or censored as with the mainland. Lots of Taiwanese certainly making a fortune off china's success.

Ive also heard some people from East Germany talk about how they had more freedom before the wall came down...or at least there were certain aspects of their situation they didnt quite appreciate until the wall came down.

Sometimes 'democratic' or 'free' countries end up being highly regulated, I think that's one of the issues of freedom. To have freedom you thereby have the freedom for sometimes very well intended regulation and laws, which is then a form of lack of freedom or easily corrupted into lack of freedom. A free country is vulnerable. In poorer countries or densely populated countries, like Asia, there is sometimes a form of chaos or anarchy that is a form of pure freedom - living in the moment. Riding bikes without helmets, cheap fake rolex's and dvd's, street food, ethnocentric societies. The freedom of being able to have sprawling middle class suburbs in western societies unfortunately comes at a cost.

What about some of the south pacific islands? They appear to have it good - tropical oasis, rich natural beauty, good food - and far enough away from everyone not to be bothered, except by rich tourists who only want to visit a few days and then leave.

The 'free-est' country as far as anyone's choices are concerned? Most probably Israel - if you're Jewish, that is (then again, if you're Jewish, most countries in the West are pretty free for you). For us Germanics in countries where we've any say, the honour would have to go to Switzerland.
