Denmark Introduces World's First Food Fat Tax

Denmark has introduced what is believed to be the world's first fat tax - a surcharge on foods that are high in saturated fat.

Butter, milk, cheese, pizza, meat, oil and processed food are now subject to the tax if they contain more than 2.3% saturated fat.

Some consumers began hoarding to beat the price rise, while some producers call the tax a bureaucratic nightmare.

Others suggest that many Danes will simply start shopping abroad.

Danish officials say they hope the new tax will help limit the population's intake of fatty foods.

However, some scientists think saturated fat may be the wrong target.

They say salt, sugar and refined carbohydrates are more detrimental to health and should be tackled instead.

Saturated fat is the wrong target. It's excess refined carbohydrates that's the problem.

Not like it's a big deal though. People who know the numbers said that this will be, on an average, a change of about 200 kronor more for a person in a whole year (which is about 31,40 US dollar or 22,60 Euro).

Still it's just that much more tax that the government is trying to collect from the citizenry. At what point does it end?

It'll end when they stop being so money hungry.

Doubtful that will ever happen though.

I agree that saturated fat is completely the "wrong target". Saturated fat is good for you if you eat less than 20g a day (although this amount varies from person to person) and our body needs a little of it.

They definitely should switch their tax to sugar and refined carbohydrates, and also processed foods while they're at it if they want to propose a successful health tax to compensate for poor health from poor eating habits. Leave saturated fats alone.

I don´t like the idea of "food socialism" and "food taxes". We should be allowed to buy and eat what we want, and without receiving fiscal punishment (by higher takes) for eating what we want. It´s my body after all, and it´s my risk if I love to eat food which contains higher rates of fat. It hurts no one. And bodies work different: Some bodies can manage fats better than other bodies.

Levying a tax on cheese that exceeds 2.3% fat? I would expect fat-free cheese to taste pretty awful, lol.
