The Reilingen cranium, is from a pre-neanderthal type with some features shared with classic neanderthals.

Here, it is found that Reilingen, and Swanscombe, and Atapuerca AT-SH-CR, and possibly Bilzingsleben and Vertesszolos, are part of a "Stage 2", which is more similar to neanderthals, than are Arago, Mauer and Petralona, which are here interpreted as representing "Stage 1".
