Although Blacks constitute approximately 50 percent of murder victims each year, 80 percent of the victims in death penalty cases were white, and only 14 percent were Black.
The reason blacks are so overrepresented on death row is because they are significantly more likely to commit murder:

A United States Department of Justice report which surveyed homicide statistics between 1974 and 2004 stated that of the crimes surveyed, 52.2% of the offenders were Black, 45.8% were White, and 2% were Other Races

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_an..._States#Murder
So despite the fact that blacks made up only approximately 10% of the American population during that time period they accounted for more than half of all murders! That is a huge amount, roughly 10 times higher than the white murder rate. But it gets even worse when you look at black-on-white crimes:

The differences between black and “white” rates of interracial crime are enormous....between 2001 and 2003, blacks were 39 times more likely to commit violent crimes against whites than the reverse, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery. There were an average of 15,400 black-on-white rapes every year duringthis period, 139,000 robberies, 489,000 assaults, and 12,762 sexual assaults. By contrast, there were only 900 “white”-on-black rapes every year, 7,600 robberies, 101,000 assaults, and 3,217 sexual assaults. Of all 768,879 violent interracial crimes involving blacks and whites, blacks committed 85 percent and “whites” 15 percent.

What about interracial murder? The Supplementary Homicide Reports (SHR) include the race of the victim and offender, and make it possible to calculate
rates of interracial murder. In 2002, blacks were 16 times more likely to murder W&H than the reverse. SHR statistics from 1976 to 2002 tell us blacks murdered 26,727 Whites during those 26 years, and Whites murdered 10,207 blacks, making the black-on-white murder rate 17 times that of the
    white-on-black murder rate

Blacks are also far more likely to commit officially recognized "hate crimes" against whites than vice versa:

In 2002, there were 8,832 bias crimes reported to the FBI, of which 5,738 were crimes of race or ethnic origin. The rest were for reasons of religion,
sexual orientation, or disability. The FBI says there were 5,119 suspected hate crime offenders whose race was known. Of that number, 3,712 were whites and 1,082 were black. It is widely believed that blacks are generally victims rather than perpetrators of hate crimes, but they are actually more likely than whites to be offenders. On the basis of offense rates—number of offenses divided by population— blacks were 82 percent more likely than whites to commit hate crimes of all kinds, including those based on religion, disability, etc.

Blacks were also considerably more likely to commit crimes of racial bias against whites than the other way around; any given black person was 2.25
times more likely to commit a hate crime against whites than the reverse.

The NCVS tells us that interracial multiple-offender offenses are even more lopsidedly black than interracial crime as a whole. In fact, whereas blacks
committed 10,000 gang-rapes against whites between 2001 and 2003, the NCVS samples did not pick up a single “white”-on-black gang rape. Overall,
blacks committed an average of 251,000 multiple-offender violent crimes against whites per year between 2001 and 2003, and “whites” committed
32,000, which means blacks were the perpetrators 89 percent of the time.

Bear in mind, these are only officially recognized hate crimes. The government is generally unwilling to prosecute blacks for hate crimes most of the time. To my knowledge not a single one of the participants of the black-on-white flash mob violence this summer has been charged with a hate crime (even in spite of the fact that many of the offenders have openly admitted that they were deliberately targeting white people). In other words, even though blacks are far less likely to be charged with hate crimes they STILL commit hate crimes at a significantly higher rate than whites do.

Part of the reason for this is because the majority of people who receive death sentences do so for committing particularly heinous murders, for example torturing complete strangers to death for no explicable reason. So-called "crimes of passion" (for example, when a person kills another in a fist-fight) are not punished with the death penalty. It is reserved for the worst crimes only. Once again, the brutal torture and murder of complete strangers is another area that blacks significantly out perform whites. Take a look at the crimes of a couple of other blacks who were executed around the time Troy Davis was:

-Alabama has executed a man described by a police informant as trying to make a name for himself when he killed a convenience store clerk in 1994 during a robbery. Thirty-seven-year-old Derrick O. Mason was given a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. central time Thursday at Holman Prison. Mason was convicted of killing 25-year-old Angela Cagle during the attempted robbery of a convenience store in Huntsville, Alabama. Authorities said he forced Cagle to strip naked and shot her twice in the face at close range.

    - A (black) who raped and suffocated an 88-year-old woman was the first person in Virginia to receive a lethal injection using a revised three-drug version, last Thursday (Aug 18). Jerry Terrell Jackson, 30, was put to death after he was found guilty of the rape and murder of seamstress Ruth Phillips in her Williamsburg apartment in 2001. It has been reported that Jackson broke into the woman's home during a burglary, put a pillow over her face and raped her. According to the police, Jackson then stole her car and used the $60 he stole to purchase cannabis.

Troy Davis and Lawrence Brewer: 2 executions, 2 reactions

Troy Davis and Lawrence Brewer were executed Wednesday night. And the nation's reaction couldn't be more divided.

There was heartbreak and outrage at the news that Davis, 42, was put to death for the slaying of a Georgia police officer -- a crime that many, including former President Carter, do not believe Davis committed. Some say the execution of Davis could ultimately lead to the end of the death penalty in the U.S. by underscoring flaws in the legal system.

Among the tweets this morning, carrying the hashtag #TroyDavis: "A KKK member once said they dont need to walk around n sheets, they get us by becomin officers, judges, & lawyers" and "It's so sad it takes the death [of] an innocent man for folks to question the death penalty, so sad".

Davis used his dying breath to insist he was not responsible for killing Mark MacPhail, an off-duty Savannah, Ga., police officer gunned down in 1989 while coming to the aid of a homeless man. "I personally did not kill your son, father and brother," he told the victim's family as he was strapped to a gurney in a Georgia prison in preparation for the lethal injection. "I am innocent."

Doubt about Davis' guilt had been raised after key witnesses recanted their testimony. Death penalty opponents around the world closely followed the case as it made its way through the courts, including a last-minute attempt for a reprieve from the U.S. Supreme Court -- and were shocked and saddened when it did not come.

Meanwhile, Brewer, a 44-year-old white supremacist, was also put to death Wednesday night in Texas for the racially motivated 1998 dragging death of a black man.

The brutality of the killing shocked the nation and ultimately led to new state and federal hate crime legislation. The victim, James Byrd Jr., was looking for a ride home when Brewer and two friends turned on him. They drove him down a remote road, beat him, and then chained him to the back of a truck and dragged him for several miles before dumping his decapitated body in front of an African American cemetery.

Brewer also proclaimed his innocence, to a degree, acknowledging a role in the attack but insisting he did not kill Byrd.

The reaction on Twitter to his death was almost gleeful in some corners, seeming to reflect a belief that Brewer got what he deserved. Among the Tweets: "JUSTICE SERVED" and "That dude deserved guns AND electric chairs...hot mess!"

As the news cycle churned, reaction in the Davis case seemed to move on to efforts to overturn the death penalty, with many calling the execution a watershed moment.

But there were also plenty of comments pointing out a perception of hypocrisy in the different reactions to the deaths. Among them:

--"Lawrence Brewer was also executed while claiming his innocence. Said he assaulted the man, but did not kill him. He didn't get any attention"

--"Why no outrage among celebrities over the execution of racist lyncher Lawrence Russell Brewer?...looking at you @AlecBaldwin"

--"Funny that people are calling 'racism' for Troy Davis when Lawrence Russell Brewer was also executed yesterday, for killing a black man."
