    Surname Query

My father told me that his mother is German, but her maiden name (Wallin) is Swedish according to my research. Can anyone offer me clarification or advice? I don't want to assume there was a mix up on my father's part, or that my grandmother's family moved to Germany some time ago.

Foreign surnames were are not uncommon in Germany. Historically there has been a fair amount of mobility within central Europe, especially among the noble class and artisans, whereby a whole host of names were introduced. If the surname is of Swedish origin, then at some point there must have been an ancestor originating from there.

Try this link, it will show where people with that last name currently reside in Europe and America.

Good tools. Sweden had the most Wallins by far, followed by Norway.

All right, thanks. This is exciting, to know my ancestry a bit better.
