And you do? What qualifies you as an expert? Whole books have been written around this. Defining it in a few words is very hard.

Read books like this for a range of ideas about warriors.

Words don't mean anything, definitions are for material things, a term which has a clearcut borderline is materialistic.

A warrior spirit is far from being materiell, it is idealistic and there you may have characterisations with in general only point to it.

    Definition of ideas are nonsense.

when you cannot recognize a spirit when you see it, you won't recognized it when I describe it.

Can you define your name sake 'Erlkoenig' please do so.

Warrior do make rituals. That is as well in a modern Army as in the past with warrior bands.

In the german Army after you got from bootcamp into your stem unit, first night the older soldiers came after you. Beat you up, put black shoecream all over you, brought you into town and kicked you out naked, locked you into a cabinet and threw you out of the window and more of such fun.

Those initiation rituals go back for a long long time.

There are other rituals also reported:

    The Gifts ritual

To foster the mutual obligation between king/bandleader and his fighter the king gave gifts to his warrior, they had special meanings for him and increased the status of the warrior, they may have been of practical value or were a sort of honor given to someone: weapons, armor, horse stuff, jewellery and land.

There was a mutual 'debt' between king and warriors.

The king in turn gave also gifts to the Gods.

    The symbel ritual

A symbol consisted of strong alcohol, ritual speech and gifts. It was most likely a warrior Blot. The warrior might have boasted to take down such and such, who was an enemy of the king and his people. (success would not be promisable as that was part of fate, but the attempt until one's own death could be promised) (The average life expectation of warriors had been between 20 to 30 years)

the loyalty of the warrior to his king could be expressed with words and gestures, like laying one's head on the knee of the king (while the sword of the king was on his lap)

The place the king was sitting on during this ritual was the 'gift-stool'.

Most likely the cermonial procedure was to to do the symbol in the night, at the morning was the gift ceremony after that vine and women, singing, dancing, tales, old memories etc.

    ritual warfare

Reputation meant a lot to a warrior, anyone scratching on that would have faced a duell.that kind of fight followed strict rules (propably different than ordinary war-fare.), also known as holmganga.

    The sword ritual

The sword had a very special meaning for ancient germanic warriors. At the hilt it had a special thing to attach a ring (or several). this ring would be given by a king as the acceptance as a warrior.

Also often during a wedding the wedding ring would be given to the woman by the sword. As it was obviously connected to an oath/vow the ring had special meaning too.

the sword came usually down from the ancestors and such through the maternal line. That means a dying warrior would will his sword to his daughter (most likely to the one who had a child with the name of the dying warrior) (Also women were gifted with armor and weapons as a dowry, most likley for the to be expected sons)

A sword was thought to have 'power'. People knew what the sword was used for in which battle, they knew the owners who carried it before. It sort of got a mythical power by it's own. The new carrier would of course do everything to not stand back before the previous users of this sword.

Often the gifting of a sword was also connected to a piece of land.

The sword also contained the 'luck' of the family, the personal power acquiered by the forebears and passed on through the maternal line. (that is what Tacitus describes).
