Madame Tussauds in Hitler row as it refuses to stop customers doing Nazi saluteComplaint alleges 'anti-semitism and bigotry'

Tussauds 'proactively' encourages visitors to interact

Waxwork had previously been kept in a glass case

Their arms raised in a Nazi salute, two young tourists pose alongside a waxwork of Adolf Hitler.
This was the sight which greeted an Israeli couple on a visit to Madame Tussauds in London.

The couple, whose grandparents survived the Holocaust, photographed the incident and complained about the tourists' behaviour, which they described as 'an unequivocal demonstration of anti-semitism and bigotry'.
Nazi salute: The tourists pose beside the Nazi Fuhrer
But while Tussauds apologised for any offence caused, it insisted: 'We proactively encourage our visitors to interact with the waxworks should they so choose.

'We absolutely defend the right of our visitors to make such choices for themselves, as long as they behave themselves responsibly.'
Its comments were described as appalling and insensitive by Lord Janner, chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust.

The unnamed couple, who live in London with their baby son, visited Madame Tussauds this month, joining the crowds of summer tourists queueing to see waxworks of celebrities including David Beckham, Kylie Minogue and the Royal Family.
They described the figure of Hitler as 'extraordinarily disturbing'.

In a written complaint to the London attraction, they said: 'Not only was it upsetting to see such an evil person replicated in the museum, but we were horrified to see tourists posing with Hitler and doing a “Heil Hitler” salute.
'We are the grandchildren of concentration camp survivors – the very people that Hitler tried to kill.

'To see him memorialised was painful and to see people smiling, posing with him and saluting him with a “Heil Hitler” – an unequivocal demonstration of anti-semitism and bigotry – was disturbing and hurtful beyond words.'
Controversial: The waxwork of Hitler was only moved to the museum's Great Hall in 2002. Before that it had been kept behind glass because of frequent attacks

The Israeli woman asked for the waxwork to be removed from display, adding: 'I believe such a statue is offensive to all minorities who Hitler tried to exterminate, including Jews.'

The model of the Fuhrer had previously been displayed behind glass because of frequent attacks from visitors who spat on it or pelted it with eggs.
But in 2002 it was moved into the Great Hall to stand alongside Winston Churchill and other leaders from history, as organisers said it would 'create a more emotionally-charged experience'.

Lord Janner said he was appalled not just by the tourists' behaviour but also by the reply to the Israelis' complaint.

'It is upsetting and offensive to see young people posing in a Nazi salute by a waxwork figure of Hitler and particularly distressing to descendants of those who suffered under his regime,' he said.

'I'm appalled at Madame Tussauds's insensitive comments defending such activity, as surely they have a responsibility to ensure visitors behave appropriately and respectfully at their museum.'

A Tussauds spokesman told the Daily Mail that staff were all trained to intervene if they saw visitors behaving 'disrespectfully'.

She said staff would have asked the tourists to stop if they had seen them performing the Nazi salute.

'Madame Tussauds is apolitical. While we would never set out to offend, neither do we make personal or moral judgments when choosing our figures.
'Our criteria are very simple – our figures represent either individuals who have reached the top of their chosen profession or area of activity, or who have significantly changed the face of history – good and bad.'

Near the end: A wax figure of Hitler sits in a mock bunker at the German Madame Tussauds in Berlin. It is illegal to glorify the Nazi leader there

A waxwork of Hitler has been on display at Madame Tussauds in London since 1933, and has often been the target of vandalism.

A branch of the attraction in Berlin also has a model of the Nazi dictator, although it shows him as a slumped and shabby figure in a bunker.

In Germany, where glorifying Hitler is a criminal offence and the Nazi salute is banned, visitors cannot stand next to the waxwork because of the layout of the bunker.

In 2008, a man was prosecuted and fined £780 after he decapitated the model, which has since been repaired and put back on display.

So, some [certain] people want to tell me who I have to glorify and whom not? Funny, but I do make those decisions myself and won't need any help by hooknosed people to do so.

Well, Hitler meets these criteria, therefore displaying him as a wax figure is justified, after all he is an important historical figure. I find the usual 'moral outcry' highly amusing

Whether or not we like someone, shouldn't determine whether they had a historical significance or not. I think the new generations should learn about the WWII era and understand who was involved in the events that happened then. Seeing a wax replica of Hitler is just helpful in a historical perspective. The same would go for a wax figure of Tojo, Stalin or Churchill.

It is offensive that all sorts of minorities swarm our lands and tell us what we have to do or not to do in OUR countries because they feel "offended" by this or that of our culture and history. Tin-Tin is taken off the bookshelves because some negro feels offended, Nordic Myth in movies features "minorities" because they'd feel offended if not, and Israelis feel offended by a figure in a wax museum. There goes our culture and history, buried under piles of BS of this or that minority feeling offended and expecting us to comply to their wishes.

Maybe Mme Tussaud can place a warning at the entry to the room and keep out minorities who could feel offended... oh noes, that would be discriminating, no?

Bah, just go home to Israel and leave us alone. Then I'd maybe no longer feel offended by the existence of Jews

Mme Tussaud, Adolf and the Jews

Not at all surprised here (and thanks for this thread topic brother Ocko).

This incident is yet one more example of the direction our world is headed where PC-thinking and the opinion or sensitivities of the minority supercede the freedoms and rights of the majority.

Here is an example of this being carried to the ultimate idiotic conclusion.

Both my older brothers attended and graduated from a high school named Robert E. Lee ("Volunteers"), named (obviously) after the Commander of the Confederate Army during (what we call here in the South) " the War of Northern Aggression" - more commonly known as the Civil War (although there was absolutely nothing "civil" about it).

The school mascot was a large paper mache caricature of a Confederate cavalry officer and their school flag was the Confederate Battle Flag - each and every time the school's football team would score a touchdown, a group of flag wavers all dressed in grey (symbolizing the national colors of the Confederacy) would run the length of the football field in celebration. It was actually pretty emotional to see this.

So enough for the background of the school...

Lee has always had a very strong athletic department and in the hallway of the school there is a huge trophy case and on the floor in front of the case is (was) a beautiful tile mosaic of the school name, the mascot and the flag.

One day, a Negro student walked past the trophy case and she was "strongly offended" by having to subject herself to this "reminder" of slavery, persecution and subjugation of Blacks and so she went to the principal's office to complain.

The principal immediately notified the district officials about what had happened and then the media got wind of what was happening. The district decided to change the flag "design" so as not to be offensive to anyone. The mosaic (which had been installed and remained untouched for almost 30 years by this time) was "altered" to reflect this "change."

What happened at Tussaud's Museum is just another example of how the Liberal idiots around the world are doing all they can to control how people act, behave, read, watch and even think ("thought police").

"Big Brother" and "1984" is becoming more of a reality with each passing day.

Personally, I think they're just jealous of Hitler's superior fashion sense.

I could see being offended if they made that gesture at you personally. But if they're doing it for a photo or something, let it go.
