Germans - Are You Ashamed of the Bavarian Stereotype?

I have been asked where my bundhosen and dirndl are before. What do you, Germans and Austrians, think of the Bavarian stereotype? Does it stain your heritage or does it promote it?

I personally think this part of the stereotype is better, and well received than the hitler one. This is the Germany i kind of dream of and wish to stay. The lederhosen, dirndls, beer. It represents a true germanic culture, that i pray stays for as long as Germanics are here on Earth.

Being an Austrian, and thus of the larger Bavarian continuum, and also from an area where it's evidently not uncommon to wear the traditional garb, at least to festivals, I couldn't be ashamed of us being used as the stereotype all over. It's my local heritage that I'm proud of, and thus there's not much to be ashamed about it, really.

What I find curious about it though is that the way Germans are portrayed around the world is: Looking and acting like a Bavarian, but having the sense of humour and the everything-is-efficiency approach of "the Prussians". Everyone who's experienced let's say Thusnelda or I around the board, will know we're anything but devoid of humour.

That being said, we're more relaxed and more hot-headed than the Northern half of our folk. We'll take an approach of "it'll sort out" in some extent, but will argue vehemently and vigorously if someone crosses us the wrong way. We Bavarians also have a knack for highly metaphoric language, especially when complaining about something.

Germans - Are You Ashamed of the Bavarian Stereotype?

What the Hell is "Bavarian Stereotype"? I have never heard of it before.

As my German heritage is from that geographic region known as "Bavaria", I am extremely proud (and rightly so) of this fact.

As I have stated here on the forum some months back, my maternal grandmother was a very proud German lady (from Bavaria herself) and when I was about 3 or 4 years old she bought a completely authentic Bavarian costume, complete with lederhosen, green felt hat and suspenders (still have it all too).

If I can ever find a German Heritage festival in Texas I will purchase a pair of lederhosen to wear when I attend the event.

I wonder if this would look good with Cowboy boots? Hmmmmmmmmmm.

That Simpson's reference describes the stereotype perfectly... and I'm liking the responses.

Personally, my grandmother is Austrian Bukovinian, while my grandfather's side is from Sachsen-Anhalt. I don't mind the Bavarian totally, but I hate when it is used to describe all of Germany. Yes, the Bavarian tracht is a part of our heritage, but I can't simply ignore the habits of the northmen.

In other words, the stereotype isn't bad, but it mustn't be used as a paintbrush.

So an "ethnic German" from Bukovina? That'd be most wonderful to hear, perhaps you can relate one or two things she told you also about the local culture there elsewhere on the board, would be lovely to hear, life in the enclaves and former enclaves has always been a special interest to me.

I've also wondered about the same, it's like two stereotypes combined to one.

I'm not Bavarian, but I don't feel ashamed of this stereotype, why should I?
I grew up in Franconia, which is officially part of Bavaria (don't tell a Franconian he's a Bavarian ), and traditional clothing there is a bit similar:

Older people still wear it, it's nothing uncommon, younger adults only wear it at the annual "Kerwa" (church fair) or other festivities.

The Franconians/Bavarians issue is most certainly mutual, however there's no bar to there being good Franconians like yourself. In fact, most Franconians I've met I actually liked - don't tell Thussy, she'll consider me a traitor, or sth.

You folks do have a wonderful traditional clothing indeed, that's to be said. Or as a Bavarian would say: The only beautiful thing about a Franconian is his Tracht.

Well, the "jolly German" stereotype with lederhosen and beer mugs is certainly better than the "evil Nazi" stereotype with the genocidal racism and Prussian lack of humor.

Ah. I had the impression you were a half Ukrainian and half Austrian who lives in Canada.
