German Left Provokes Row on Berlin Wall Anniversary

Three Die Linke politicians snub minute's silence and far-left newspaper lists reasons to be grateful for Berlin Wall

A group of leftwing politicians in Germany have been criticised for refusing to observe a minute's silence on Saturday to commemorate the 136-plus people who died trying to breach the Berlin Wall.

A far-left newspaper added to the controversy by printing a front page saying "thank you" to the wall for "28 years of keeping the peace in Europe" and "28 years of plentiful crèche and kindergarten places".
The timing of both stunts was provocative: Saturday marked 50 years since the East German government built what it euphemistically described as "an anti-fascist protection measure". To mark the date, a minute's silence was held across Germany at noon, with Angela Merkel attending an event on the former death strip in east Berlin.

But at a political conference in Rostock, in the former East Germany, three delegates from Die Linke party refused to join in when 100 colleagues stood up to observe the silence.

One was Marianne Linke, a regional politician from Die Linke, which has links to the old East German ruling socialist party. According to the tabloid Bild am Sonntag she tried to justify her actions by saying: "The border closure in 1961 would not have happened without fascist Germany." The implication being that the wall was either a rational reaction against a West that had not dealt with its Nazi past, or a result of the way the allies divided up Germany after the second world war.

Even the then US president, John F Kennedy, believed a wall was better than another war, she is alleged to have added.
Linke's comments were sharply criticised by Steffen Bockhahn, head of Die Linke in Mecklenburg Pomerania, where Rostock is located. "I am furious. It's disrespectful to the victims to stay seated. The building of the wall is nothing to be justified."

Die Linke have repeatedly caused controversy since forming in 2007. Gesine Lötzsch, national chair of Die Linke, caused a storm on Friday by describing the construction of the wall as a logical consequence of the war.
On Saturday the far-left weekly newspaper Junge Welt (Young World) marked the wall's anniversary with a front cover featuring a picture of armed East Berlin soldiers defending the German-German border at the Brandenburg Gate.

"Thank you" ran the headline, and underneath were 13 reasons to be grateful for the wall: "For 28 years without sending German soldiers to war … for 28 years without unemployment and unemployment benefit … for 28 years of no doctors' fees and no two-tier health system … for 28 years of education for all."

The story even paid tribute to 28 years of Club Cola, East Germany's answer to the Coca-Cola of the imperialist west, and of FKK, a nudist movement popular in East Germany.

Meanwhile, secret files obtained by Der Spiegel magazine apparently show that West Germany's post-war chancellor Konrad Adenauer wanted to "swap" West Berlin for a more convenient and fruitful bit of East Germany.
The western part of the divided capital was difficult to defend as it was an island in the middle of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Adenauer is believed to have proposed a secret deal with the Soviet Union to the US foreign minister Dean Rusk just a few days before construction of the wall began on 13 August 1961.
According to Der Spiegel, the cha
ncellor described the proposed deal as an "advantageous exchange" for West Germany. In exchange for relinquishing West Berlin Adenauer wanted the state of Thuringia, as well as parts of Saxony and the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
These were areas that had been occupied by British and US soldiers at the end of the war and then handed over to the Soviet Union in order to gain control of part of the capital. Adenauer apparently planned to reverse this deal.

The chancellor, who governed from 1949 to 1963, believed West Germany would gain prosperous new industrial areas in the deal. After initially taking Adenauer's idea seriously, Kennedy eventually "recoiled" from the proposal, Der Spiegel reported, and West Berlin remained marooned in the GDR until reunification on 3 October 1990.

That's really insulting to all the people who suffered. How can you be 'thankful' that your own country was split apart?

    They have some nerve.
    Proud to be Germanic.

Even though my ancestry is English, Germany is my favorite country.

Wonder how much these morons get paid? I doubt they have much of a problem with that aspect of "fascism".

I have family who had to leave everything behind to escape East Germany. The people were poor, miserable, and oppressed. How can there still be Germans who look back on that period with fondness, still hold to the beliefs that forced millions of Germans to live under Communist tyranny?

The German left is pulling her usual story, however I find it mildly curious that they'd be lauding a Germany split into two parts, because it means that it isn'T even up to date on its own history:

"Als ich wenige Tage vor dem Bau der Mauer die DDR verließ, war mir eines schon klar: Du gehst nicht ins 'Exil', du gehst in einen anderen Staat, nicht aber in ein anderes Land"*

    - Rudi Dutschke, leader of the leftist student revolts of 1968, who was also arrested on August 14, 1961 for trying to tear down parts of the Berlin wall.

    - The very same Rudi Dutschke in the aforementioned article.

--- Martin Walser, leftist poet, a few years ahead of reunification.

And last but not least I will leave the extremist German left with the words of their ideological fathers, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who formulated the first point of their programme in 1848/1849 as:

" 1. Ganz Deutschland wird zu einer einigen, unteilbaren Republik erklärt."****

--- Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Translations of aforementioned quotes into English:

*"When I left the GDR a few days ahead of wall construction I already knew one thing: You're not going into 'exile', you're going into another state, but not another country."

**"Through the capitalist Americanisation the cyclical process of dissolution of historical and national identity was, without a ceasure, executed. Through the Asiatic russification came a subversive and contradictional solidification of the same"

***"One cannot remove Germany from my historical perception. They can print new maps, but they cannot reprogram my perception. I refuse to be a part of the liquidation of history [...] We all bear on our backs the fatherland corpse, the beautiful, the dirty, that they cut into pieces so that we are now meant to live in two abbreviations. We must accept the existence of the FRG just as little as that of the GDR. We must keep the wound called 'Germany' open."

****"1. All Germany shall be declared as a unified, indivisible republic."
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)

In Italy the worse politicians are from left, they attack their own country just because they want to have authority for destroying public accounts.

I hope a day everyone can be free from this plague.

I cannot help but wonder why Die Linke still has any voters, considering there are still lots of members with a SED-background and Lötzsch published an article in their party-magazine that communism was still their long-term goal.

Instead of primarily focusing on the right our Verfassungsschutz should rather take much more closer a look at the left!

the wall was built in 1961 at the same time when mass-immigration started in western Germany.

Still today there is a significant difference where the occupiers go and live: they prefer Berlin and the former western states, the former eastern states are still pretty much racially homogenous.

From the point of view of preservation the wall was indeed a good measure.

With respect to those this directly affected, I say this from a purely historical standpoint: It's really an interesting, ironic, and tragic story of a nation's admirable struggle and defeat. First they were attacked by their cousin nations, allied against them with the Asian hordes. Then their loyalties were split in two, German against German, loyal to their former enemies, the Russian hordes and the capitalist West. It's lamentful to think that my distant relatives were killing each other and my ancestral lands were being ravaged by war for the sake of dividing a cousin nation in such an ironic manner.

The Wall served to keep people from leaving rather than from entering. Former GDR regions are also still catching up economically, one reason why the West is preferred for immigration.

Some speak about a link between the regime in the GDR and the current rise of nationalist ideology in the former East. A reason is said to be the different approach the Republic took regarding nationalism and particularly mass guilt. Although the GDR also rejected "fascism", the emphasis was on anti-capitalist ideology rather than Holocaust responsibility, for example. That was considered an issue of the FRG. For a long time the GDR refused to pay any compensations to Israel and depreciated Zionism.

Anyways the reaction of these few politicians is disrespectful, even their own colleagues from the party thought so. Even acknowledging some advantages of the Wall, it still doesn't undo the deaths of their German countrymen. They can believe what they want ideologically and politically, but if they are unable to keep that minute of silence they would have better not attended in the first place.

Left-wing extremism is also a concern of the BfV, including some extremist factions within the Left Party, although admittedly it doesn't seem to be on equal footing with nationalsocialism.

Yes exactly! All this right and left stuff has really pulped everyone's brains. Communism preseved some white people and even some germans, thanks to that wall.
