Sharp Rise in Presence of Right Wingers on Social Networks

Sharp rise in neo-Nazis using social networks: study

    (AFP) – Jul 21, 2011

BERLIN — German neo-Nazis are looking increasingly to social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube to propagate racial hatred and recruit new members, an official study released Thursday indicated.

The Federal Agency for Political Studies said around 6,000 far-right posts had been found on social networks in Germany last year, about three times as many as in 2009.

Agency chief Thomas Krueger told reporters as he presented the findings that the use of such websites by right-wing extremists had "escalated dramatically".

"We must not give ground to the far right and their hate propaganda," he said.

Krueger said the sites themselves must clean house and do a more thorough job of enforcing their own rules of conduct with the help of other users who alert them when offensive videos and slogans appear.

"We need users who defend our fundamental values and fight off neo-Nazis," he said. [...]

    Oh the irony.

As the establishment is getting upset over right-wing activities on the Net they are doing what they can to make it easier. The Swedish development aid agency SIDA is financing the development of the Tor-project and other software solution that will enable democracy activists in e.g. the Arab world to network and spread their propaganda without government intervention.

If push comes to shove, they themselves will already have developed all the tools that we'll need.

Well on the other hand most social groups being based in the USA, some have a free speech clause and do actually enforce it. e.g. the recent case of Facebook declining to remove Holocaust denial groups.

Politicians and authorities have however waged war on Internet privacy and anonymity, especially in light of the Norway bombings. The media also offers support by highlighting the dangers of "right-wing extremism". Online hosts are frequently being requested to hand over details about their users. Data protection is however also still valued by some of them.

Anyways turning the Internet into a police state is no solution. Trying to silence dissenting opinions is pretty much a Stalinist attitude, and could also backfire. For example German youth have become increasingly interested in "far-right" ideology. I've never really understood this kind of thinking, normally one would bring counterarguments to unpopular/politically incorrect point of views, not try to silence them. But then again we don't live in an either free or rational society.

They're probably already content if it's pushed away from mainstream sites as much as possible, so that the average users will only rarely get in contact with opposing views. And people might subconsciously self-censor themselves more and more if their precious Facebook accounts could be removed for political statements. For containment they don't have to be able to completely block us.

Stefan Glaser, the head of the division studying the far right at jugendschutz.net, a group seeking to crack down on the problem on the Internet, said neo-Nazis often tried to mask their racist content with coded messages.

He cited a recent video showing men in white masks carrying flaming torches through the deserted streets of a town at night, which he said was a warning of a purported “death of the German people” due to immigration.
I find it typical that they cite legitimate peaceful protests when talking about things they want to forbid or 'crack down on'.

Sharp rise in [insert any group] using social networks.

And yet Agence France-Presse decide to look only at Neo-Nazis. Nothing to do with AFPs known connection with communism
The Mitrokhin archive identified six agents and two confidential KGB contacts inside Agence France-Presse who were used in Soviet operations in France.
Must be a slow news day.

Research by the British thinktank Demos for the first time examines attitudes among supporters of the far right online. Using advertisements on Facebook group pages, they persuaded more than 10,000 followers of 14 parties and street organisations in 11 countries to fill in detailed questionnaires.

The study reveals a continent-wide spread of hardline nationalist sentiment among the young, mainly men. Deeply cynical about their own governments and the EU, their generalised fear about the future is focused on cultural identity, with immigration – particularly a perceived spread of Islamic influence – a concern.

OMG OMG!!! The Nazis are using facebook!!! OMG!!! OMG!!!

I love it how they focus on NS individuals using social networking sites to communicate while the immigrant rape-gangs are running around raping our women and nothing gets said. Absolutely nothing, as if its understood that that behavior should be accepted and tollerated.

I don't know what to say about NS other than let it rest in peace.

I think because of this sort of thing NS will forever be tarnished. Nobody will ever view NS as a valid political orientation. I think we need to abandon ship and revamp the ideology, keeping its essence/soul intact, but give it a completely different name.

Don't you think it has been tried over and over again ?
