Post Neanderthals Finally Solved... They Were Overrun by Modern Humans

It has been one of the great mysteries of human existence.

But scientists have cracked what happened to our Neanderthal ancestors, who ruled the globe for 300,000 years then suddenly vanished.

For generations, experts have pointed to humans’ superior brains or better hunting techniques as the reason for our supremacy.

But Cambridge University researchers have discovered the real answer was much simpler - we overran them.

Modern humans, who evolved in the cradle of Africa, arrived in Europe with more than ten times the population of the Neanderthals and took over their habitats.

This dramatic increase in numbers meant the Neanderthals were unable to compete for animals and scarce food supplies during the freezing sub-zero winters.

And with more of our own kind, and more complex systems of communication, humans relied on each other for help and were able to trade resources in times of scarcity.

Professor Sir Paul Mellars, Professor Emeritus of Prehistory and Human Evolution at the Department of Archaeology, said: ‘Faced with this kind of competition, the Neanderthals seem to have retreated initially into more marginal and less attractive regions of the continent and eventually – within a space of at most a few thousand years – for their populations to have declined to extinction….around 40,000 years ago.’
His teams studied ruins from the Perigord region of south-western France which contains the largest concentration of Neanderthal and early human sites in Europe.
There they found clear evidence that humans penetrated the region in ten times the numbers of the local Neanderthals and much bigger areas of occupation – seen in stone tools and animal food remains

Let's hope and fight that we won't meet the Neanderthal's fate, then.
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)

I greatly enjoyed these apropos snippets from The Guardian's take on this:

Homo sapiens from Africa swarming into Europe

Neanderthals died out in Western Europe after a surge of modern humans arrived from Africa and made them a minority in their own land, researchers claim.

The invasion of so many modern humans overturned the Neanderthals' domination of the land

I suppose this marks the one and only time we will get to savour such more-timely-and-relevant-than-they-know sentences from that paper.

The Neanderthal couldn't help it. We can. That's the saddest part.

These academics love to make grandiose claims knowing that the media will sometimes latch onto them and turn said academic into a household name. Truth of the matter is that his theories will be challenged by a whole host of academics, and eventually a new theory will come along to supplant his. And then another will supplant the latter, etc. The problem with academia is that the theories that it spews out are all constrained by the prevailing ideological rage gripping the institution. Once it was Christianity, then it was liberalism, now it's some sort of post-colonialist left-wing stew. The one thing I learned in the four years I spent at university was to not take anything that these academic say seriously.

Ah yes, they actually told the truth for once. Granted you have to read between the lines a little.

Scientists are always coming up with new stories about the history of the evolution of humanity. What they say changes every few years, some scientist will make a new claim to make a name for him or herself. It is just ridiculous. I'm not sure how I am supposed to trust any of their information seeing as it changes regularly what the story is.
