I liked this movie as a child (still do) and i always wondered if these are accurate Vikings. What language are they speaking in this movie? Sounds Swedish.

Some of them speak Swedish, some speak Norwegian ^^

Seems like some of the soldiers only know a few phrases in poorly executed Scandinavian.

The clothing of the warriors look off (too much fur and leather, and a weird bellyplate on one of them)

From what I've read, the Danes who invaded Ireland were called 'black' vikings due to the colour of their shields, while the Norwegians were called 'white' vikings for the same reasons. I don't think it had anything to do with pigmentation.

Why is it that these Vikings would look that much different from the people who live in the North now? Aside from the height factor, I don't see why the difference from today would be that extreme.

Exactly, if you want to see a viking most of us need only look in the mirror

Valid point, but I would think some differences would have happened over the years. You got slaves they brought from other parts of Europe (5-10 % of the total population until it was made illegal), you got the black death which killed of large parts of our population(which probably integrated these into the "north" even more rapidly) and at all times since the industrial revolution you have had about 5 % "immigrants" of the total population. I am not stating they would look significantly different, but some differences over the years must have occurred.

As a rule of thumb, I turn to larger farms with rich soil if I want to know how a population of a region looked in the past

I don't now if its been mentioned already, but during the Viking age and prior to that, the climate in Scandinavia was warmer than it is today, more like central Europe. So the Vikings may have been less borealized than modern Scandinavians, having less soft facial features

Well, someone covered most of what I was going to say. Vikings were not commonly over 6 feet tall. Just under actually. Also, it was the Celts who had horned helmets. See how German/Celt were confused sometimes? Enough so that it's STILL a misconception to this day. One thing is certain, Vikings were the strongest, most powerful men in the world. Chopping wood and rowing (with both hands equally) from a very young age. Also, I keep seeing people typing that red/strawberry blonde hair is a Gaelic trait or "not-germanic". Does anyone who believes that realise that Žórr is a red-head? Vikings sailed all over the place, and adapted to the native cultures pretty easily. Not always, but it happened enough. At least they didn't mix with the Moors right? The Vikings were NOT all blonde haired and blue-eyed.

That re-creation pic in the thread starter post is hideous. And whether the technique used was "impressive" or not ... I think the final result is terrible. What's with the black circles under the eyes? Green eyes, brown hair and black, thin eyebrows? With eyes so close together they're almost touching? I think the re-creation is "okay" but NO ONE looks like that.
"The mystery and secret of Wotan is not that "knowledge" of him is passed along through clandestine cults or even through the re-discovery of old books and texts--but rather that such knowledge is actually encoded in a mysterious way in the DNA, in the very genetic material, of those who are descended from him." - Secret of the Gothick God of Darkness

This trait was attributed as typical among the Germanic tribes by Tacitus, as well.

    Estrid from Sweden

The recreation of Estrid from Sweden looks scary real. A much more flattering representation than the York facial reconstruction. BUT... A good ole Norse farmers wife bearing a brace of kids and toiling on the farm in the harsh northern winds. Forearms muscled from milking cows and disciplining the help. Ruling the homestead while her man is away a viking. I could see the York lady doing that. Estrid I could see more high born and working on needle point. The norm was probably somewhere in between
