    Landsmót

I´m not into the horse scene here in Iceland though I do love the pure Icelandic horse very much. Every year in Iceland since 1950 there has been held an annual gathering called landsmót hestamanna where there are held races and the horse is celebrated.
Although I haven't been to one of these gatherings the pictures and videos I see from these gatherings always manage to fill me with great pride and love for my country.

I´d like to share with you some of it

Icelandic horses are great We use them here for outdoor viking plays. I dont know much of the breed, where does it come from? We have the fjording in Norway, a Norwegian breed and also one of the oldest horse breeds in the world. I read that the Iceland horse really is a pony, but it's so strong so it's classed as a horse.

This breed came to Iceland with the settlers and because of Iceland's isolation and in modern times because of law the breed has been kept pure and in it´s original state.
We have laws in Iceland that make it illegal to import any other type of horse and if a horse leaves the country it may never return.
I've heard that the Fjording, the Icelandic and the Faeroe Horse are closely related but I´m not an expert in these matters.

Goodness, Iceland cares more about their horses than their people!

Thanks for sharing this stuff, it's very interesting.

You might say that. I think we have these laws for every breed that is unique to Iceland like: sheep, chickens, goats, pigs and cows. There are probably more but these are just off the top of my head.
