    (How) Do You Celebrate Midsummer?

What are your plans for Midsummer? For myself, I will be finding a different variety of fresh herbs for my home that have cleansing qualities (mistletoe, vervain, St. John's Wort, heartsease, lavender and yarrow to name but a few) and enjoying a small fire fest with some close friends and family. (One of my fav sabbats besides Samhain.)

I also find Bee balm, phylox, oxeye daisies, roses, lily of the valley, calendulas, marigolds and others are in bloom, it is a time of olfactory abundance. I planted marigolds over three years ago in my garden and every year they renew themselves when their seeds spread with the fall winds. It is a very hearty flower.

As it is a tradition to burn nine different woods for the Beltane fires, it is also a tradition to burn nine different herbs on the midsummer fires. The herbs burned are mugwort, plaintain, watercress, cock-spur grass, mayweed, stinging nettle, apple, thyme and fennel. The cycle of completion.

Blessed Midsummer to you and yours!

    Post Re: Midsummer~

welp, i'm going to try and kindle a real midsummer fire with what i've heard should be a piece of fir and a piece of oak. i wish i could remember now where i read that. those herbs your referring to i've heard of too. is it the nine-herbs-charm?
in any case i shall probably get frustrated and use my trusty old bic lighter.

other than that i haven't a clue. xept i'll be waveing the sun good-riddance. i can't wait for fall and winter.

cheers and a happy solstice from a very sweaty and melting and aggitated berchta.

Midsummer is a normal working day here

"E tutti si scandalizzano quando sentono dire: quel tale tipo di mammifero o di uccello ormai è sparito dalla faccia della terra, non lo vedremo più; è una grave perdita. Certo, si tratta di gravissime perdite.
Ma non sarebbe forse più grave se sparisse una comunità umana?? --Bruno Salvadori

Seven pictures of northern European males and seven pictures of northern African males were presented randomly via a computer screen to 82 Italian female undergraduates of the University of Padua, Italy.
Each picture depicted a full frontal face with a neutral facial expression. Participants were asked to classify each picture as either northern Italian or southern Italian.
On average, the seven pictures depicting northern Europeans were classified as northern Italians 81% of the time. The seven pictures depicting northern Africans were classified as southern Italians 83%
    of the time.

    Post Re: Midsummer~

The Solstice is rapidly approaching now! I have a fine view to the East from my house which looks toward a mountain and northward extending ridgeline. I am amazed every year at just how far to the North the sun rises during these long days and also how far to the north it sets.

Even at 9:30-10:00 PM there is still a faint, sometimes orange, sometimes "Parish blue" hue in the Northwestern sky only to return to the Northeastern sky some 6-7 hours later. The days are long and the nights short here at 44 degrees north latitude....and even more so in the ancestral lands of NW Europe where they sit at a higher latitude.

I'm with you bretcha! I am one of those who does not look forward to the high days of summer and her sun which watches down on us for hours-on-end. Give me the cool, Canadian northwesterlys of fall or the raw, maritime northeasterlys, straight & fresh from the North Atlantic anyday!

Being of the Earth-bound, Yeoman type, I will, to appease my sense of always having work to do around the farmstead, combine my Solstice fire with some good practical 'clean-up'. Just inside of the woodline, there is a large Fir tree which fell in a great wind a year ago. In the process of crashing to the Earth, it took with it a few smaller Hemlocks (Tsuga Canadensis--just so the Euro-folk don't confuse our tree, the Hemlock with their herb know by the same name ). It is high time for me to clean this up and what better use will I have than to torch it on the Solstice? It is, afterall, just a short drag from there out to our back meadow.....

    Enjoy all!

    Smile Happy Midsummer Night!

May you all find the time to honour summer solstice while burning down a wooden fire (or something else )

What Are You Doing for Midsummer?

So June 2oth in the evening until the 24th are the summer solstice festivities. I personally don't know anyone here in the states that cares, but I'll be having an extravagant one-man party ( ). In fact I will be initiating myself into the spirit world [not exactly for the first time...] and will be contemplating this phase of the cycles.

How about you? Any family bonfires or anything?

Why the sad face? A one man party is perfect!

I will get together with friends and make bløtkake. If I do not have to work so late otherwise I will spend some time in the woods and perform a bløt

There are some people probably a lot of people who care about the summer festivals. In the finger lakes region of new york there is a scandanavian festival that a lot of my relatives plus my relatives friends go to every summer. I went to a couple when I was a kid and they were fun. My grandfather went to this festival before he died on thanksgiving night of that same year. My dad and me talked about going earlier this year but so much is going on that I don't have time. Maybe another time.

Went down to Avebury (stone circle/sacred site) yesterday and 'communed'. I'll try to have a few quiet moments in the coming week, forget about my everyday life, and reflect on midsummer and what it means to me - and more importantly - my ancestors.

I will be avoiding one of seven major cities, just in case.
