    Germanic Scottish Clans

We've probably all found our way to the thread "Is Scotland Germanic thread", but just how many Clans actually have Germanic origin? Below is a list of all Germanic Clans with an example of one of the Clan's tartan below the name and a link providing more information. If I happened to miss one, just let me know and I'll put it up.

Don't forget that Clans do have more than just 1 tartan. Clan names / surnames can also have more than 1 variation of the spelling

There are a lot of Clans of Norman origin, and some of my ancestors supposedly were. I'm supposedly descended from a French nobleman who was taken hostage, but later did all of these great things for Scotland, or so I like to think, but it may be a bit more complicated than that. I'd like to hear more about the ones that were of Germanic origin, I know Macdonald is theorized to be based on DNA studies.

What about the surname 'Rodger'? I've read from various sources that it could be of Celtic or Germanic origin.

Yeah the Macdonalds were located in the Highlands of Scotland I have researched a lot of their family trees and found out they had some Norwegian Norse in their background. A lot of the Scots in my family were of Anglo Saxon or French Norman background. I think the Fraser clan also has a good deal of French Norman related to it.

I'll be wrapping the list up tomorrow with Viking / Anglo Clans.
I've got some Stewart in my ancestry On my mother's side....we are related to Mary, Queen of Scots I just also found out that our primary French ancestry comes from the surname Burgoyne....as in General Burgoyne from the American Revolution....and it is also a Germanic name in origin....from the Germanic tribe that invaded France.

Yay! I figured most of my Frenchie connection was Germanic anyway.

I am related to the Comyn, Stewart, Bruce, and Fraser there are other Germanic clans that I am related to on my Scottish sides. A majority of my Scottish sides are Anglo Saxon/French Norman. There are a few that are Gaelic/Norse though.

It seems to me that Scotland was heavily anglicized especially when the Border Reivers who were predominantly Anglo Saxon/Danish crossed over into Scotland. Also a lot of the more gaelic lowland Scots were pushed out to the Plantations in Ulster. And thus you have the Ulster Scots.

If your counting Norse/Gael clans you could probably add in a few from the Outer Hebrides. When I was researching clan Mcneil that I am descended from I learned there seemed to be a lot of Norwegian influence up there at one point.

Clan Sutherland, tracing its roots to a 12th-century Flemish nobleman named Freskin.

Freskin was also the progenitor of Clan Murray.

I am descended from the Sutherlands, my ancestors hailing from a village along the Helmsdale River, and expelled during the Highland Clearances.

MacNeill is one clan from the Outer Hebrides that I can recall.

Scotland would be an interesting place for DNA testing to determine how much Norse/Nordic blood is in Scotland and how many Scots are of Germanic/Norse/Nordic origins. This may already have been done, I don't know. Similarly it would be interesting to see how much Gaelic blood is in Scotland and just how many Scots are of actual Gaelic origins. Both these results could be compared and contrasted with parallel DNA testing done in Ireland.
