This is a good place to post about this topic because there are so many Europeans and other Non-Americans on here.

How do you all feel about Universal Healthcare for all citizens? As compared with the American system. Do you feel that Healthcare is a right or a privilege?

I work in healthcare myself. I wish this country had Universal Health Care. I feel healthcare should be a right for all.

Do we all have a right to a house, food, a car, a job etc? When you say "right", you mean that someone should be forced to pay for it because everyone does have the right to what ever they can afford.

I know of no emergency room or doctor who is turning people away.

My ideal healthcare system would be 100% coverage until 18-21 then it would drop down to 50% coverage with insurance and private doctors available. Under certain circumstances you would have 100% coverage such as being injured in war or something like that. If the government system in place still had a private sector, private medicine would be expensive but you could write it off on your taxes at the end of the year.

Health care as a right means that all people, regardless of socioeconomic status, should have access to basic health care services. It's an ideological argument....much of which gets debated based on the practicalities of such systems being implemented.

Possible scenario:

Your child is sick and needs a doctor. You have no money to pay the fee. Would you condone robbing (at gunpoint or thru intimidation) of a neighbor to get the money?

I like not having to pay for my healthcare, I have to pay a ridiculous amount for dental of course, but I am getting sick and tired of being treated equal to the immigrants. When they get treated before I do, I become even more furious.

I work in emergency rooms. You're correct. They cannot turn anyone away. But, families can become utterly bankrupt due to the exorbitant costs of medical care. In many cases, medical care can get denied on the basis of inability to pay. We are not talking about being turned away from an ER.....but we are talking about basically all other avenues of medical care.

Not to mention that even as the ER does not turn a person away......the BILL they slap you with will send you to the poorhouse half the time.

A neighbor? No. The doctor who is refusing my child lifesaving treatment? Not sure.

It's kind of similar to the moral dilemma that asks: Was the husband morally wrong to steal the medicine to treat his dying wife because no one would treat her unless they had money to pay?

How is the Canadian system treating the immigrants before their own citizens? I ask because my stepchildren have dual Canadian/American citizenship....but they cannot get medical care in Canada at all.
