The Arms of Krupp by William Manchester. Obviously about the Krupp family but they are intertwined with modern German history.

I picked up this book at a used bookstore a couple weeks ago. Haven't read it yet.

Ernst Jünger - storm of steel

First world war diary from a soldier, one of the best books I have.
The way he describes the awful times in the trenches and the happy moments with his comrades are excellent. Some people say that the book glorifies war, but they couldnt be more wrong.

On which period of German history do you want books? And is it a general history, military history, social or economic history that you want?

For a general history book on German history, Cambridge University Press publish an excellent synoptic history entitled A Concise History of Germany by Mary Fullbrook. It's been around since about 1990 and it is a very readable book. It is an excellent introduction to German history.

Sorry I meant, in general the classics of German history-ie the same way Bruce Catton or Shelby Foote's works are on the American Civil War for instance.

Two books I liked and enjoyed from two German perspectives on the Second World War were Manstein's Lost Victories and Doenitz's Memoirs: Ten Years and Twenty Days. Even if one isn't generally a reader of military history, these two books are well worth reading for their interesting information and insights.

    Best German History books

Perhaps the best German book on History is the, "The Philsophy of History" by GWF Hegel...
