How Heavy Metal Is Keeping Us Sane

To see a world without heavy metal, an unmetalled world, simply rotate your cranium a few degrees to the right or left. Perhaps you are in Starbucks, where it is time for your Iced Caramel Macchiato. Not a single unnameable beast assaults you as you make your way to the counter. Rounding the display of merchandise, you are neither hexed by depression nor dragged to hell in the arms of a she-demon. You place your order, quite failing to bellow with psychic agony. There is no heavy metal anywhere.

Or is there? For as you wait, drink in hand, at the condiment bar, in the usual muttering press of sugar-grabbers and milk-seekers, you feel a tremendous agitation. You feel, in fact, fleetingly homicidal. Who are these people? Why are they taking so long? If only you could smite them all …

    Excellent article

    It definitely keeps me sane.

Metal truly is an unconquerable spirit. It's a continuum manifestation of that warrior spirit which our ancestors carried out, now with nobody to (rightfully) kill in the modern degenerate age, we flock en masse like armies to the brutality Metal offers, our favorite bands the warlords. It's no wonder why the main themes of heavy metal are Death, Violence, Hate, and Sorrow, more infrequently themes of Beauty, Nature and Joy. Ironically, the music itself is a confluence of all these emotions and themes, whether it's intended or not. Without it, life would be a hell of a lot more boring. The adrenaline it produces is incomparable.
Yeah, it sounds corny and stupid, but I love Metal wholeheartedly, I sort of overlook the part it plays in my life. I wake up listening to metal, I go to sleep listening to metal, it's just a part of who I am. But don't call me a metalhead...

Let Matt Pike of High on Fire explain

    Indeed, great article

...but heavy metal reminds me that Starbucks, like much of modern life, is a fiction. Go through the membrane, break the crust, and everything is metal.
    -> real!

Else, I wholeheartely agree with you there, Elessar. The archaic spirit of metal keeps one sane in an ever increasingly insane world.

Various forms of music have helped to keep me sane through the years. As much as I love metal it just doesn't qualify as "one sound fits all". I certainly can't listen to metal when I am studying. For that I usually put on some chamber music with the volume turned extremely low. If it is too loud I tend to drift off into the music and am unable to concentrate on my work.

Did classical (metal of its day) help people stay sane in Mozart's time?
What did our ancestors do to stay sane without Varg?
Unless you were rich very few people got to listen to music on a frequent basis back then.
Maybe (just maybe) too much music has made us spoiled to it, so that if we go for a certain length of time without it perhaps it might cause one to feel a bit of a psycho.
Well, spoiled or not I am still grateful to have it in my life. Almost everything I do has its own little accompanying soundtrack.
I would not want to live without it.

Metal for me comes down to pretty much one thing... venting. Without it I might actually run thats slow-ass mexican driver off the road or saw the barrel off my shotgun and go on a rampage whenever I get slighted in the very least. When I'm stuck in traffic because those jackasses want to look at the wreck on the other side of the highway, I have metal to take all that pent up FURY and just send it aaallllll out the window... as loudly as possible so every idiot out there can hear it and know how close they came to being bludgeoned with a truck. Thank you metal, you make life tolerable

Metal is keeping me sane because it makes me feel good, in the way that there are still real people playing real music!
And not those trendy wanker disc-jockey tecno/trance bollocks, since they only need a computer and some buttons to make 'music'!

I'd bought my first metal album when I had the age of 11! It was ...And juctice for all by Metallica.

Yeah Metallica ruled. My first metal album was Master of Puppets.

I can’t live without metal, especially black metal. For me, it’s got a lot to do with the way the songs are structured, and their dark/mysterious nature. The music is structured in an unconventional way. It seems free-flowing, much like life itself. The music also conveys various mixes of emotions, that come and go, much like in life. I also like how it’s not explicit. Most music is explicit, and follows a certain pattern, as if saying "this is a song" and I don’t like that. Black metal is chaotic, and it doesn't try to tell you that it's a song. If you have a trained ear, you will be able to appreciate it as such. Amid the chaos there are moments of real beauty. These moments are something you have to discover for yourself. Much like in life.

I am able to relate to metal because it speaks of the chaos in my own life.
