    Personally I don't believe or disbelieve in reincarnation. Here is my attempt to imagine how reincarnation might work;

    I will start by asking a few questions and then trying to answer them myself!

    Who gets reincarnated, and does everyone need to live multiple lives inorder to assend to the next plain, or do only some of the less progressive souls need to be reborn many times?

    Some statistics; It has been roughly estimated that since man began 50,000 years ago there have been over I00 billion people born , most of whom did not even reach adulthood.
    Of the total, about 6% a little over 6 billion are alive today.
    This means that there are now at least 6 billion seperate souls in existance.

    Question; Are most of these souls new souls or has this total of 6 billion always dwelt on (or around!) the earth as human souls awaiting a chance to be reborn?
    If the latter conjecture is chosen then each of the 6 billion of us currently living humans has been born an average of (6 into 100) 16 times. 16 times in 50,000 years is not a lot, especially as in most cases we would have died before age 12 and perhaps before reaching the end of infancy.

    The majority of these lives occured before 1200A.D and the vast majority before 1650. (see the table at the bottom of the link above)
    So, this idea that there have always been at least 6 billion souls leads to a picture where souls are waiting hundreds or thousands of years between rebirths, but everyone has lived, taking that view, several times before.

    Another conjecture might be to say that the human race started with two souls in existence and that every additional rise in population allowed the incarnation in human form of a previously lower order soul, that of a dog or an ape say.

    Whenever the population was stable as during the hunter-gatherer period there would not be many vacancies for new souls, except occasionally, whenever one would assend to the "next level".

    The human population in hunter-gatherer times (50,000-8000 B.C) would have numbered at most only a few million (souls) and had an average life expectancy at birth of only 10 years or so assuming high infant mortality. But as I see it these few million might have lived over and over again many hundreds or thousands of times each, depending on when you decide what you would want to call humanity began, be it at 50,000 or 100,000 years ago.
    By the same token the doubling of the worlds population in the last 40 years would suggest that most of the people now living are being born into their first or one of their first lifetimes. Assuming a low number of souls reaching enlightenment in each generaton. It sems there would have been little room in the distant past, which makes up the bulk of human history, for these Billions of souls. By that view,a high percentage of us,more than half, have probably not been born before.

    It is also possible to create reincarnations.
    By telling akid fromn the day he can walk that he is a reincarnation or some great hero, along with helping the kid take that role as his own, he will soon believe in being a reincarnation and act the role given.

    Which might sound weird to some, but otoh you ave certain goals in life, and a real place in the now, future and past. And a bit depending upon the society you either find yourself the center of adoration... or drugged in a room with padded walls.

    What have you guys been smoking...?:smokin01:

    I wrote a little story once about a soul that has been forced to re-incarnate more times by far than any other, and in each life this soul suffers and dies most horribly. Over time, the soul begins to twist and grow dark, burdened by the pain and suffering it has been subjected to. Accordingly, the lives it leads begin to slowly take on dark undertones, and slowly the lives become more and more morbid, violent, sadistic. Then, after a beheading, the soul finds itself in hell, chained for torture by Satan's devils.

    Satan, pondering his misery and war on heaven, is so lost in his thoughts that he desn't notice how hell falls silent. Once he awakens from his dark thoughts he feels something is wrong. Looking out a window overlooking the valley of hell he is schocked to find it empty and silent. Then he hears footsteps climbing towards his tower.

    In the end, this little story ended with this soul, having conquered and engulfed hell and earth into himself, enters heaven and slays the angels, joining them with himself, only to find his ultimate goal, the throne of God, empty.

    I had many plans on how to take the story forward, but in the end it just seemed to dry up so I never finished it.

    Oh, and I don't believe in much except my own bad luck(a cosmic rule, I've found) and biology.

    @Arcturus
    That sounds like the kind of story I'd like to read! Why not finish it, copy-right it, and sell it to a magazine.
    Or, write 10 more and publish them in a book. Seriously, it could be good!

    past-life regression

    I actually underwent two past-life regressions. I would love to share this experience if anyone is interested. Also, has anyone else on here undergone this too?

    Gee whiz, Arcturus! You won't let me talk about Bigfoot, and now I can't discuss reincarnation?

    Go on IvyLeaguer, tell us about your past lives, I think it could be fun to hear. Were either of them in stone-age times? I'd be interested in hearing about that.
