    I loved history in school. It was my favorite subject and it still is today.

    What I find most fascinating about battles from bygone centuries (as opposed to the modern era) is that the outcome was often decided in a single day and the fate of whole nations and dynasties could depend on this. Some which spring to mind are:

    Hastings, 1066 ... the end of Anglo-Saxon England
    Bosworth, 1485 ... the end of the Plantagenet dynasty
    Waterloo, 1815 ... the end of Napoléon and French domination in Europe

    The consequences of victory or defeat were usually disproportionate to the conflict itself when you consider, for example, that the whole of Anglo-Saxon England was lost on the result of a fight between about 15.000 blokes in a field .. I mean, I've seen bigger punch-ups than that at some football matches!
