I would say these series are the best anime series for a more grown up audience , though not all of them have a germanic theme (order is not the order in which i like them ^^) The target audience is usually male between 18-45 and females 18-45 :
    Elfenlied
    Hellsing
    Steins;Gate
Ghost in the Shell: stand alone complex
Cowboy Beebop(wird oft als die beste anime serie aller zeiten bezeichnet,
soweit würde ich aber nicht gehen, aber sie ist echt genial)
    Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood
    Serial Experiments Lane (very philosophical)
    Planetes
    Wolfs Rain
Captain Future (DIE serie meiner kindheit)
    Neon genesis evangelion
    Death Note
    .hack

I hope i haven´t forgotten any one ^^ Now while the series are already an important influence on pop culture, the real groundb reakers where some anime movies :

    Ghost in the Shell :

Not only is it one of the most influential anime movies, it is generallly one of the most influential films ! The lexicon of international movies lists it as one of the 100 most important movies of all time, and they do not stand alone in this ! The makers of the MATRIX trilogy often admit that this has been the most important influence on their work to give you just one example of how this movie has shaped our culture for decades !
It was also extremely good in it´s prophecies of the future. Many things in the movie are now a normal part of our life, but didnt exist back then : GPS for everyone, internet for everyone, mobile internet, internet on a cellphone etc.etc.etc. So let´s see in how far their predictions of cyberisation will come true

    Princese Mononoke

This helped make anime as big as it is today, a mass phenomenon ! It´s message helped also make the environment movement along in japan, and made it a mass phenomenon as well.

    Akira : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_%28film%29
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094625/

Final Fantasy : the spirits within :

This film revolutionized the way animated movies where made, CGI´s where made, in short every kind of animation in movies. You think i am exaggerating?
Do you know what motion capturing is ? It was invented by squaresoft, and this movie showed what it could do. In a way this made this movie the most expensive animated movie ever, and one of the most expensive movie in general with 140 million $ production costs. Square intended to make the character of Aki Ross into the world's first photorealistic computer-animated actress, with plans for appearances in multiple films in different roles.
The developed a whole new hardware and software for this, and then wanted to rent the hardware to other studios for other projects. But in the beginning nobody was interested in this. Nowadays EVERY character in anime movies is at least partially produced with this technique :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_capture

Spirited Away : the producers are by many called the walt disneys of japan, and this is the best movie they ever made ! Among anime fans it is one of the hottest debates if Princese mononoke or this movie is the bext family anime of all time. The sountrack alone is worth watching this movie ! A film for the whole family, DEFINITELY WATCH !!! :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_away

I will complete the list another time, since i don´t have enough time right now ^^
There won't be humans in 500 years. Enough people choke themselves when they jerk off we gave it a name. We ain't a species made to last.

Judging by it´s name common sense must once have been a pretty common thing. When and why did that change, so it became the rare treasure it is today???

    Spice and Wolf

This Japanese Anime plays in an anonyme, but obiviously Germanc landes. A youn trader starts to North with his ware and he get a travelpartner, a female wolfgoddes who can be a giant wolf or a nice woman with wolf ears and tail. The main players in the two series the Trade Companies and the Church. Like as the high Medieval here is some heathen city, well, the most of them Christian. Unfortunatelly the creators never make the third and the fourth season. These are only in book format.

A very Germanic character is Fleir "Eve" Eiterzental Mariel von Boland.

Animanga might be interesting as art and allude to European settins or concepts or mythology but I can't think of many explicitly Germanic in setting.

A long standing conspiracy theory is that Evangelion contains Nazi propaganda. YMMV. Something to do with aircraft carriers.

Most manga and the anime adaptations thereof are serialised as pot boilers. Series end abruptly to tie dissatisfaction of the fans when the author gets bored or runs out of ideas. Popular series are flooded with filler. They are popular fun not high art.

Americans should think of manga and light novels as you would US pulp magazines and anthologies. A genre that died out in the 1950s but I would like to restart incidentally. Most pulp fiction had no pretentions and was forgotten. Probably a high percentage of pulp ever written was lost. Though the genre also produced geniuses like Lovecraft.

    Space Battleship Yamato 2199

The Yamato was the largest and strongest battleship once and ever is built. It was 263 metre long and 38.9 metre broad. It sank with Yamamoto Admiral 1945 by the Americans.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 from 2012, what we see, it plays in the future. Humanoid alliens have occupied the Solar system and the Earth closely to fall. The humans have gotten a massage another allien civilization that if the human can travel to their Capitol Planet, they will give the technology to the human can defeat the alliens. Hence in secrtet the human have created the Space Battleship Yamato, the largest and strongest spaceship once and ever have created. It has a super cannon what can destroy a battleship with one fire and this ship an aircraft carrier too and brings with him many spacefighters.

The story is very interesting, the Yamato get various trouble. Moreover there is the humans and the alliens, both of them play their daily drama till the resolution when these daily dramas grow heroism, sacrifice, treachery.

I suggest to see, because the story interesting and later very dramatic.

    Official artwork from Gainax.

If you look closely there's a scene where she wears Nazi uniform. Watch this AMV closely at 0.25.

This video from the New Neon Genezis Evangelion. See the old one, it is not so bad, but the ending episode is weird.

This clothing in Asuka is a Luftwaffe uniform. The Luftwaffe was not war crimer organization like as the SS, moreover the contemporary Federal Republic of Germany's Airforce is Luftwaffe too. Moreover a modified version of the Iron Cross is the ensing of the Bundeswehr. This is boring that people see everything nazi what is German.

This picture is from the www.luftwaffe.de and show a Bundeswehr and a Luftwaffe soldier in parade uniform.

Leopard 2 tanks with Iron Cross:

I see Asuka and she reminds me a short serie, the Girls und Panzer. The story is that teenager girls make races to shoot wih armoured vechicles, but nobody injures under the serie.

Anno suffered depression while working on Evangelion and the weird ending supposedly reflects that. The Napier book goes into a bit of detail. People look for nonexistent meanings in Evangelion because it is confusing. Literally books were written in Japan about this.

If you look at NGE the characters are all dysfunctional. There is social commentary in NGE. About hikikomori syndrome and marriable women who cannot have relationships. One of the manosphere sites used NGE characters to explain modern men and women. Anime can be art but annoying people talk as though the medium were enlightened on the whole. Of course Gainax is itself seen as milking a cash cow nowadays. Its come down a long way since Wings of Honnemaise. Gainax is not really my cup of tea but NGE has true classic status. Its also a great lesson in public responses to confusing media messages.
