Oshii's interpretation of GITS now has a western remake.

Ghost In the Shell 2017 Opening Theme by Kenji Kawai

This one seems more respectful of the source material than the Akira remake was talked about. People do not read old manga or they would notice how much Oshii changed it in adaptation. For the better mind.

People forget some settings and genres - fantasy, sci-fi, folklore and horror - are better presented as stylised animation that outright live action. Something films like 300 have caught onto. In a "normal" sci-fi or fantasy film much is special effects anyway and 2D animation would bring down the cost. So why bother with live action and photorealistic CGI for such genres?

I prefer the line art aesthetically. Bowden was writing more about Western comic books when he penned Scum but he mentions manga.

Oshii is an interesting director (he does live action not just anime). He played with transhumanist/cyberpunk type themes in Avalon not just GITS. Have to wonder how many people get Oshii: Inosensu baffled many although I got it. Hard sci-fi in popular culture is rare. Oshii worked on the 80s anime series Urusei Yatsura (the one with Lum the invader oni) and directed two feature films into which he inserted philosophy. Yes I am fond of Oshii.

Someone dubbed four episodes of Urusei Yatsura as though it was made in Britain. It was aired on the BBC as a curiosity. Sadly the gags were altered because of cultural differences. The original series was a deliberate inversion of those magical girl shows from America that inspired AA! Megamisama. Normally the woman brings order to the chaos: feminists hate the stereotyping in that genre, though the man looks incompetent and the whole genre came about from female empowerment in WW2 factories. Urusei Yatsura changed that so the woman brings the chaos. Though unlike (say) Haruko in FLCL she has homely desires she is just a chaotic presence with a bad temper. So in UY you see modern anime as we know it evolving. What started as the subverted trope is now the standard stereotype in Japan for things like FLCL (or even Evangelion for Shinji) till something like Negima has numerous women creating chaos for one hapless young man. Usually the disruptive female is now divorced from the demure yamato nadeshiko.

Unfortunately the dub feels wrong as though its trying to hard to be British. Not that it was intended to be taken seriously but I think its supposed to remind you of British cartoons like Bananaman made at the same time. (English dub voices do not always match the Japanese ones anyway if you compare the soundtracks.)

Lum the Invader Girl. Episode 1, part 1

    I should like this but I can't.

Negima would be better dubbed in Britain because there are Welsh and Scottish characters in it. Shame the anime was poor but UQ Holder is being adapted. Negima is misunderstood because Akamatsu's intention was to subvert the harem manga sexual awkwardness by removing the sexual attraction element.

By the way you might like Drrr it has references to Norse mythology. Not many. Its like the Gainax anime you can read what you like into it. A lot was changed in adaptations from the novels: the Izaya chases weren't in Narita's books and Izaya has a creepy fixation on Mikado instead of Shizuo.

Drrr is worth a mention because people like to read things into it - like they do Evangelion. Some of these involve Norse myth. YMMV. In the anime Namie asks Izaya if he is really Loki. Read into scenes like that what you will.

In this video Millenial Woes discusses anime and baroque sexuality. He has an appealing voice but does drone on.

    On Homosexuality and Uranus [AntiDem]

To be honest the upper class norms described by Woes only remind me our problems are top-down. For the eugenicist we do not actually want congenital homosexuals to pass on their genes. For a biological realist it is pretty absurd to act as though something inborn can be just a phase.

Antidem boycotted an anime he enjoyed because he felt it was pushing faggotry. Sadly Cultural Marxism is taking root there.
    https://antidem.wordpress.com/2014/0...nny-trash-bin/

I noted a rise in yaoi and boy's love in Japanese pop culture. Reminds me of what Patricia Highsmith had said: that male homosexuals misrepresent their love at once as "just like you and me" yet somehow more pure. (Why? Procreation is impure?) The love and not the sex is weaponised. Gay pornography itself may be tolerated because only gays want to watch it. The outwardly respectable depictions are in fact far more harmful especially in front of children.

    Space Battleship Yamato 2199

I have seen more times this short (only 26 episodes), but fantastic Japanese Anime series. The base story is that in the end of 22th century an alien species, the Garmillars from the Garmillas, Salazar System, Large Magellan Cloud System have penetrated into the Solar System, Milky Way System (Galaxy) and in unknown circumstances the Earth Spacefleet and the Garmillar Spacefleet opened fire. Both of them, the Humans and the Garmillars believe that the other shot firstly. The Earth Fleet have stopped the Garmillars, but they have deployed a machine on the Pluto what can hijack the meteors and they have maden bombardment the Earth and the whole planet have becamen a rocky desert.

The Mankind can only live under the soil and they have prepared to left the Solar System with the remains of the Fleet when has arrived another alien and she has offered that if an earth spaceship can get her planet, the Iscandar, they will be able to give them a technology what recreat the Earth. She has brought with her plans to this special interstellar ship. The last part brought another Iscandarian, but she impact to the Mars and died, but the Humans could get the last part of the New Ship from the Mars.

In 2199 CE the new, huge spacebattleship, the Yamato have left the atmosphere the Earth and she eliminated all the Garmillar Forces from the Solar System. The ship has the name and the form of the ever built greatest battleship, the Japanese Imperial Battleship Yamato. However this is a spaceship, a spacefighter carrier, she has super cannon, what can destroy planets, an unpenetrating energy shield and a hyperspace engine to intestellar jumps.

The crew is Japanese like as the traditional Japanese Animes what haven't got negro/latino/jew/arab/asian quote like as the American cartoons and Holywoodians movies. The only non-Japanese is a Marsian pilot, Yamamoto, she has red eyes and white hair what is a mark of the Marsian Humans in the Anime. By the way her name was the name of the Great Admiral Yamamoto, the captain of original Yamato. Another "non-Japanese" the blond and purple-eyed, slightly gracil Mori officer from the bridge who is suspected many of the crew that she is alien, because the allien Iscandarian have slightly gracil body, with several shade of blond hair and blue, purple or hazel eyes.

    An Iscandarian female:

The Garmillars are fully humans like as the Iscandarians, however they have blue skin, purple eyes and purple blood. Their haircolour is very diversible like as the human hair.

    Garmillars on the bridge.

The Garmillar Empire is an interstellar and intergalactical empire with many subject species. These species have a very large combitation of the skin colour, eyecolour, haircolour. Some of the pretty much look like the Humans. The most interresting species the Jirel people. They have grey eye/skin/hair colour. The Garmillars tell them "witches", beacuse they have telepathic ability and they can step out from own body and manipulate others mind in thousend of kilometres. Their neighbourhood always fear them because they have these abilities and once their neighbourhood each together attacked the Jirels and they exterminated all of them, except two small girl whos became the prisoners of the Garmillars. When the supreme leader of the Garmillars got the informations of their abilities, he imprisoned them and they now serve the Garmillar Empire, one of them is in the inner circle of the supreme leader.

    A Jirel woman.

I want not spoiler more thing, just I suggest all you to download it and see it.

At least the full opening of the series.

Wulfaz: how is SBY Germanic? Honorary Aryan is not Germanic.

One could write all day on the history of anime.

Not exactly Germanic unless you think Frnce is essentially Frankish still, but Chevalier is a great underrate series set in Early Modern France. I dislike gender bending themes usually but the historic setting and plot are outstanding. Its about occultism and French secret agents in Europe and involves historical figures like Francis Dashwood, the Chevalier d'Eon, Robespierre and Catherine the Great.

First of all, the Japanese Animes have the typical Germanic Nordic female ideal like as in this series Mori Officer, the Iscandarians or many Garmillar woman. The Animes never (rarely) use the Japanese/Asian outlook. F.e. in the Black Lagoon the American Chinese Revy Lee has Germanic ideal traits, another Chinese is portrayed with Mongolid traits. The Japanese guy "Rock" looks Germanic Nordic too with black hair. It is very interesting in the Japanese soul that why choose they always the ideal of another race. Maybe the American influence. Or another classic, the Cowboy Bebop's Faye Valentine is typical Nordic.

    Yuki Mori from SBY, japanese:

    The Iscandarian from SBY:

Starsha Iscandar, the princess of Iscandar:

    Yurisha Iscandar, Starshas' sister:

    Sasha Iscandar:

    Garmillars:

Melda Dietz, the doughter of Admiral Dietz:

General Domel and his wife Elisa Domel:

    Imperial Bodyguards:

    Black Lagoon:

Rebecca "Revy" Lee, chinese, looks Germanic

Rokuro "Rock" Okajima, japanese, looks Germanic

Shenhua "Chinglish", chinese, she looks like chinese too

    Cowboy Bebop:

    Faye Valentine, looks Germanic:

Another thing is why did I choose this, the Garmillars have German names, one of them similar to the nazis: Supreme Leader Abelt Dessler, Vice Leader Redof Hiss, General of the Guard Troops Hydom Gimleh, Lt. General Erich Domel, Admiral of the Astrofleet Gul Dietz, Field Marshal Herm Zoelik, Defense Minister Welte Talan, Lt. General Ghader Talan, Major General Germmdt Goer, Lt. Colonel Wolf Fleurken, etc., here is the list of the characters: http://yamato.wikia.com/wiki/List_of...199_Characters

The Wikipedia writes that the uniforms are nazis, but they have 19th century German uniforms.

    Compare to 19th German uniforms:

I would say that is not so fair that the animators used German names and 19th century German uniforms to the "evil" Garmillar race, but here is some spoiler, that rather the supreme leader is evil, not his soldiers and the people.

"Remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus,"or that virtue "was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice."

If anime imitates "Germanic" people its because the art styles were stimulated by US animation. Besides characteristics such as grey skin are scarcely White or Germanic. A number of European countries have stimulated manga and anime aesthetics without stating so. Germany is no exception.

This is so not cultural to us, but, one of the best animations I've seen. Elfin Lied. No other way to describe it other than weird, emotional and totally messed up sci-fi.

For some reason I completely relate to Sonokawa Momoka. This anime was just light, funny and overly imaginative silliness. Great for a giggle. Sabagebu! It's about a bunch of lunatic school girls who pretend BB guns are real.

One of the best Time Travel sci-fi's out there. Steins;Gate. Has some impressive moments that will stick in your head due to their emotional intensity.
