In 1977 there was a severe shooting accident with our base-gun 155mm in Grafenwöhr Training Area:

After 3 days of intensive training we went down the range for live firing with our self-propelled M109 A3 artillery battery.

1st round loaded, piece (gun) sighted in awaiting fire-command. By then I was gunner #1 responsible for laying the gun (train the aiming device for traverse and elevation by optical means).

Shortly before the 1. round was fired I was called-in by our master-sergant to clear some minor holiday-money problems and I left the gun. According gun-routine I was replaced by gunner #2, his place was taken by gunner #3 and so forth.

Fire-command was given and when ordered "Fire", there was a very bright shine inside the howitzer and an unusual "blast" reaching even me some 30 yards away.

Gunner #1 was cut into 2 pieces along the waist, gunner #2's chest was smacked against the inside turret, #3 and #4 received severe fragment-wounds. The guncaptains both legs were broken and the FDC (Fire Directing Officer) made blind by fragments.

Reason of accident: the gun has different gaskets to seal the sliding wedge of the gun against the breechblock to avoid propellant gases evade in the Combat-compartment of the howitzer. We are talking about 4000 atmosheres pressure. In live-firing, the mild steel training gasket has to be removed against a hardened steel one which was forgotten to change by the guncaptain AND forgotten to check for by the Battery-Officer.

Still today I do thank God for this that I was ordered out before the 1st round fired.

After this accident I changed position for a Forward Observer....

1). In the aftermath of Hurricane Francis, it was reported that a tornado had developed only a few miles from my house. Thankfully, it diminished before it could reach my home. Those moments when I sat sheltered in the small bathroom were absolutely terrifying.

2). In early 2007, a cold front passed through the state of Florida. At around 5:00 AM, I woke up, feeling that something was "not right". Outside, it was raining very heavily and the winds were the kind one sees during a tropical depression. I turned on the television and I discovered that there was a tornado warning for my county. Once again, my family and I dodged it. However, the very thought of my house being struck by a tornado during the overnight hours is aboslutely horrifying.

Although it may sound childish, I'm convinced that tornadoes come from the ettins.

The suicide of my first wife, her mother 2 months later.

    3)
I was hit by a car in the age of 52. Since this i´m a nearly blind cripple with only one eye which is half-blind, walking with a crutch.

The death of my mother in consequence of breast cancer when I was 17. To see her decline was a horrible experience.

Being picked up by Africans I suspect were sex traffickers after a concert. I know I was stupid enough to hang out with them and I had a really really lucky escape (before anything happened) but it was a terrifying experience. They kept saying if I ran away they would find me. For a few weeks afterward I seriously worried they might hunt me down.

Slipping down onto a 1x2 metre ledge 3500m up on a 4000m mountain in the Alps and finding I could neither climb up nor down. Then a few minutes after calling for a rescue helicopter I saw the clouds close above my head, which if they had remained would have made rescue impossible and meant my staying on the ledge overnight in temperatures of -10 to -15c for which I wasn't properly equipped. Luckily the sky cleared again and the Helicopter was able to lift me off the ledge on a rope.
Close observation may result in feelings of horror, wonder and awe at world you find yourself inhabiting.

Something very similar happened to me when I was 14. It's an awful experience for anyone to have to go through, but especially scary for a child or teenager. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

A few weeks ago I was followed/ harassed by someone while I was driving. It was really creepy and I accidentally got into a car wreck because of it. I'm fine though, of course, but driving makes me feel a bit anxious now.

I almost choked once. It was very sudden and I realized I couldn't talk or swallow. Ended up getting the food up with juice, didn't have to go to the hospital or anything either but I was just about to call 911, and I am thankful every day I did not. I sure hope to never, ever experience this again.

When I was a kid, once in a while I would wake up at night unable to move my body in any way. I was conscious, but completely paralyzed and unable to speak. That was pretty frightening as I had no idea what was going on. I was literally trapped in my body.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But I would say the truly most frightening experience was 3 years ago when I was out with my dog several miles in the wilderness and hearing a cougar's screams in the woods. For those of you who do not know. Cougars are incredibly dangerous animals, and not only are they powerful with claws and teeth, but they can move through the woods in silence. They are master hunters and an unwary human would have little chance if a cougar decided to attack. Needless to say, I was worried as I never had heard or seen one before.

Well, My oafish dog then took off running after something and barking excitedly, and I was left by myself.

The cougar's screams and snarls seemed to be getting closer, and then I could have sworn it was only a hundred yards or so away. I drew my knife out of the sheath. Cougars scream to call to other cats in the area.

Then it was completely silent. I felt sick to my stomach as I knew that this creature had most likely discovered me and was quietly watching me. I kept watch and kept walking steadily. I could head the odd sound of moving brush and snapping twigs. I knew that it was now possibly that I was being hunted by a wild predator. (Or at the very least, followed by one)

About ten minutes later, I caught a glimpse of it. It was hunched down under a bush ahead of me and staring at me. I felt a chill go right through me and thought I was going to have to fight one of North America's most deadly animals with nothing more then a knife. A tip in case you run into one: MAKE CONSTANT EYE CONTACT.

I would say that THAT moment of facing a dangerous wild animal in the eyes was the most nerve-wracking things I have ever experienced. I just stood there doing my best to appear calm, unafraid, and talking out loud to myself. The cougar eventually got the hint and eventually got up and began to wander away.

My dog returned and began sniffing the area and we continued to head home, but I always kept looking behind me. Cougars are known to attack from behind and kill with a bite to the neck.

I would say that such an experience feels exhilarating and really raw. But I admit that being below another creature in the food chain is a terrifying experience.

If you do not know how dangerous these creatures are, then google image-search "cougar attack victim."
