8.9 Quake Triggers Tsumani Warnings Across Pacific

"Reporting from Beijing and Tokyo — Hundreds are dead after the worst earthquake in generations struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, setting off a devastating tsunami that swallowed swaths of coastal territory and fanned out across the Pacific Ocean, threatening everything in its path.

The 8.9-magnitude earthquake -- the world's fifth-largest since 1900 and the biggest in Japan in 140 years -- struck at 2:46 p.m. local time, shaking buildings violently in Tokyo for several minutes and sending millions fleeing for higher ground.

Nearby islands are bracing for the tsunami and warnings have been issued for 53 countries including ones as far as Colombia and Peru.

The Kyodo News service reported police finding up to 300 bodies in the city of Sendai in Miyagi prefecture, a part of northeastern Japan believed to have been hit hardest by the tsunami.

The city of 1 million was struck by a wave 20 feet high, then another 33 feet high. A hotel collapsed and large ships in port were seen lying on their sides."

    Japan Declares Nuclear Emergency

"Reactors at two Japanese power plants can no longer cool radioactive substances, a government official said Saturday, adding that a small leak had been detected at one of the facilities.

Atomic material has seeped out of one of the Fukushima Daiichi plant's five nuclear reactors, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) north of Tokyo, said Kazuo Kodama, a spokesman for Japan's nuclear regulatory agency.

Potentially dangerous problems in cooling radioactive material appear to have cropped up there, as well as at another of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's nuclear plants, Ichiro Fujisaki, Japan's ambassador to the United States, confirmed to CNN.

The Fukushima Daini and Fukushima Daiichi power plants are separate facilities located in different towns in northeastern Japan's Fukushima prefecture. Each one has its own set of individual nuclear reactors.

Kodama said the cooling system had failed at three of the four such units of the Daini plant.

Temperatures in reactors of that plant's coolant water soared to hotter than 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit), Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported, an indication that the cooling system wasn't working.

Authorities subsequently ordered residents within 3 kilometers of that facility to evacuate as "a precaution," Fujisaki said. That plant was also added to the Japanese nuclear agency's emergency list, along with the Daiichi plant."

    2012 is going to happen

Record setting earthquakes, back-to-back radical weather systems, random species in large numbers showing up dead, floods, tsunamis, global warming, wars happenig all across the world and the anti-christ Obama still being loved. I have no doubt that the 2012 prophecy will happen. Scientists have recently came out and said that the earth's crust is destabilizing and on March 19th we will have what is called a "supermoon"

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/201103...turaldisasters

which will trigger more floods and other worldy issues. I am getting ready for when everything goes to hell. I hope all of you are making plans also.

But, if nothing happens... I will be the first to admit that I was wrong. On the other hand, if I am not wrong, god help us all...

Japan evacuates 50,000 after nuclear power plant explosion

Reporting from Utsunomiya, Japan More than 50,000 people were evacuated Saturday after an explosion at a Japanese nuclear plant hurled plumes of smoke over the Pacific Ocean and sent officials scrambling to calm residents already shattered by the largest earthquake in the nation's recorded history.

Japanese authorities hastened to assure the public there was no danger of a meltdown at the the Fukushima Daiichi plant along the lines of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine, but they were unable to explain why excess levels of radiation were detected outside the plant's grounds.

Japanese Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi plant was caused by a buildup of hydrogen in the cooling system. He insisted that the explosion didn't cause any damage to the reactor itself but merely caused the collapse of a wall outside.

"We are evacuating people just as a precaution," Edano said at a news conference, even as television footage showed white smoke billowing from the reactor, followed by a black cloud. "There is no risk to inhabitants of the area."

It's a good book, it's very informative about the dangers of all the toxic chemicals that we're practically soaking in all the time, from birth.

The fact that Tokyo fared as well as it did is a testiment to the intellegence of the Japanese people. An earthquake of this magnitude would have destroyed every building in any other city of the world.

I would argue thatt it is testament to generations of Japanese experience in contending with earthquakes. Any developed country in as an earthquake-prone region as Japan and had the same experience in frequency and strength of earthquakes as the Japanese would have been able to render their buildings as effectively earthquake-proof as the buildings of any major Japanese city.
Between the devil and the deep blue sea.
