Strong Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. 65 Killed, 200 Missed.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) -- One of New Zealand's biggest cities lay in ruins Tuesday after a powerful earthquake toppled tall buildings and churches on a busy weekday, killing at least 65 people in the country's worst natural disaster in decades.

More than 100 people, including as many as a dozen visiting Japanese students, were thought to be trapped in the rubble as darkness - and drizzling rain - fell Tuesday night. Rescue crews with sniffer dogs fanned out across the city in search of survivors, some of whom were able to send text messages or make phone calls from under the wreckage.

It was the second major quake to hit Christchurch, a city of 350,000, in five months, though Tuesday's 6.3-magnitude temblor caused far more destruction than a stronger September quake that struck before dawn on a weekend.

"It is just a scene of utter devastation," Prime Minister John Key said after rushing to the city within hours of the quake. He said the death toll was 65, and may rise. "We may well be witnessing New Zealand's darkest day."

I hope our NZ members and their families are alright. There was a little bit stronger earthquake last year but it killed no one. This time, the destruction was more horrible.

What a terrible earthquake! I am staying in a motel so I have cable TV. Fox news reported the quake and than followed up with a comment that "no Americans were injured". How surreal.

Skadi Kiwis, I hope you guys are doing fine and are you families are, too, even if FOX news doesn't care.

I would suspect that some buildings were structurally compromised by September's quake.

It's annoying how the news networks do that in America, if there are no Americans involved then it is less newsworthy. Excepting the Haitian earthquake or any other disaster involving Negores.

Its quite shocking to hear 65 dead in New Zealand (so far), were a pretty small nation. The Aussies are sending some urban rescue people but the infrastructure will probably take many months to fix completely.

I know a young couple who live down there but I haven't heard from them cause the cellphone network is limited. They should be alright cause I don't think they live near the CBD (where most of the damage occurred).

On the evening news they stated that the epicenter of this latest earthquake was only 3 miles (5 KM) from Christchurch, (last September's was 30 miles away), accounting for the greater damage & fatalities.

They're doing that here too (even the Prime Minister said it), just "Australians". Why should it matter what the lines on the map say? They are our brothers and sisters, and the death of a New Zealander is just as devastating as that of an Australian.

I feel so horrified thinking about the terror and hell these people are going through. I have been in a building when an earthquake hit, and I have never been so terrified in my life.

Suddenly the room I was in started to move and shake, and I felt so totally helpless and scared. I was so shocked that I couldn't think straight. I just ran out as fast as I could, expecting the ceiling to fall on top of me at any moment, crushing me or burying me alive.

I hope they will have lots and lots of specially trained search and rescue dogs there. They are so important right now, I think.

    Lightbulb

In America, earthquakes are very common and almost a way of life.

On the other hand; these radical opposite back to back weather systems, rampant record setting earth quakes, global warming, economic collapse worldwide and all of the middle east at war or civil unrest sounds very familiar to the 2012 prophecy.

This has been the worst ever natural disaster for modern day New Zealand..

The death toll just keeps rising and is set to be now well above 200 with bodies being discovered by the International search and rescue teams working around the clock..

This is so sad : (

I am wondering why dont the Government just rebuild a New Christchurch in a safer non-earth quake effected part of New Zealand ?? It can easily be done..
