Eventually, we went back to church and renewed our vows about 5 years later in a simple ceremony before the parishioners.
But marriage IS A common law thing. It's not a state or church thing. The institutions only taking note and announcing it.
By common law I mean that it flows out of the practice: A mean and a woman having a common household, sexual relations and the plan to raise a family.

Since there are legal issues involved... the state may take some interest in that. What the church is nosing into this, is however another matter. There is no commandment or scripture that marriage has to be initiated or ritualized in a church. It's mentioned as institution in the bible and also that breaching it is a bad thing, but that's about it.

LillyCaterina and I exchanged rings and vows during a traditional ceremony at a nondenominational Christian church. It was a formal affair with numerous guests, and family members in attendance. Afterwards, we left as husband and wife in a limousine to begin our new life as a couple.
