I watched Donnie Darko many years ago, but the film was just lost on me, though I know it appeals to many people. The Gary Jules cover of "Mad World" wasn't to my liking, either.

Love it! I've seen it a few times years ago and the director's cut is even better.

This will sound weird but part of what I love about it is that I still don't know what the message is or what really happened. Not really.
    Spoiler!
I just don't really know and I like that about it. It's well done, has a killer cast, great acting and the music is amazing. Sometimes that's all I need in a movie.

The director's cut has got longer scenes that make certain things make more sense but also makes you question more things at the same time. It's like they don't really want you to know what's what no matter how many times you see it or which version. So you're free to decide whatever you want to about it.

I tried to get into it, but there's a lot of unnecessary stuff crammed into it (i.e. depicting bullying/racism, excess swearing, students being scolded and humiliated by teachers, two guys attempting to molest a teenage girl). I get it's trying to be realistic, but it's hardly uplifting.

But I was mostly turned off by the scarcity of music. I only remember one track that played briefly.
