    O. A. W. stands for Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke. It's a airplane manufacturer, a subsidiary of Albatros-Flugzeugwerke.

    D. I. is a plane number.

Just curious, are you asking this question after having watched a movie about the Red Baron. If so you should definitely buy his amazing autobiography. He talks about so many mind-blowing things and hilarious things like hanging out at the beach and suddenly getting shot at by boats, traveling around Germany with his flying circus, learning to fly, hunting trips, how in the early part of the war he would just ride with his calvary randomly across enemy lines and nobody was there because both sides were completely unprepared. After capturing a town he traps the town leader into a church tower to keep an eye on him lol. Though it is pretty funny, it's a very sad book though because virtually every pilot in the book dies. (Just don't bother reading the preface and introduction they're too boring and long).
